I have hit a brick wall- can anyone help?
My great grandmother was called Florence Aldesron before she married my great granfather Gilbert Alfred Skaife (Scaife). We know nothing about her parents, siblings or birthplace. My father remembers her as a formidable woman who died in Feb 1950. We think she was born in 1877/8 but I have 2 possibles born in Bramley nr Leeds or Halifax

She and Alf had 4 children (Bernard, Alec, Evelyn and Mabel) and whilst I can find Alf on the 1911 census as a boarder working in Lancashire, Florence and the 4 children are nowhere to be found
Does anyone have any info that might help?
Thanks

Alison Kelly (nee Scaife)

Have you got a copy of Gilbert and Florence's marriage certificate, and if so, what does it say for her father's name and occupation? If you haven't got a copy then that is the place to start with tracing her parents. I'll see if I can find anything to help in the meantime, though...

I can find evidence of Alf's marriage in 1902 in Leeds but I don't have a copy of the actual certificate

Okay, looking at the GRO marriage index and Yorkshire BMD, the marriage is Gilbert Alfred Scaife and Florence Beatrice Ibbitson, Apr-Jun 1902 St Clement, Sheepscar, Leeds. Can I ask where you got the name Alderson from? Is it on one of their children's birth certificates?

There is only one birth coming up on FreeBMD for Florence Beatrice Ibbitson - Jan-Mar 1878 Leeds, which fits with her age at death. She's listed for 1877 on Yorkshire BMD so was probably born right at the end of the year and registered early the following year.

Alderson came from my father but he is 80 and I suspect he may have got it wrong. We had a heated 'debate' about the date of her death as he could remember it was during and election (Feb 1950) but swore it was 1952.

Well, there is a Florence B Scaife death listed in Jan - Mar 1950, age 72, district Claro, Yorkshire West Riding, which is probably her. None in 1952. Not found her in 1911 yet.

We've definitely settled on Feb 1950 for when she died
Thanks for your help. Stella said that you'd be able to help

Ah, they're listed as Scarfe on the 1911 index, at Knaresborough:
Florence Scarfe 33
Bernard Scarfe 8
George A Scarfe 6
Eveleyne Scarfe 2
Mabel Scarfe 9 months.

Do you know- I have tried all different speelings but the one I didn't do was Scarfe. Yet Gilbert is Sciafe. Seems no-one could spell it even then!:)

looking at the GRO marriage index and Yorkshire BMD, the marriage is Gilbert Edward Scaife

That should say Gilbert Alfred Scaife :)

Sorry about that! I'll edit my post.
