View Full Version : 1911 census
On an image of one of my families there are one married couple and a 1-yr old daughter. Under the heading Nationality on the far right of the daughter's details I can just make out the word 'parentage', the rest is blocked out. Does this mean that the daughter could have been adopted? She does have the same surname as the parents.
It could mean she is a british subject by parentage but born somewhere else. I've had something like that written for a few people.
By somewhere else Kit, do you mean outside Britain?

Thanks Margaret - actually it is an image of the 1911 census you sent to me. Charles Marshall Wright, aged 29, born in Ilkley, Yorkshire. It is their daughter Norah Ellen I am looking at (for various reasons). This is all to do with the Richard Wright thread of mine.
Stella, you need to read across all three entries - "British Subject by parentage".
Thanks Merry, will take another look.
Oh yes Merry, see what you mean - thanks.

Yes, I agree with Merry. It's just the way they have written it.
Thanks Margaret - that probably throws my theory out of the window then!:d

Yes I did.

My grandfather, father and brother were all born "in the colonies" but are/were British subjects by parentage.

Some people didn't read the instructions properly and filled in the British subject bit even for people who were born in Britain.
