The son and daughter on the censuses, Evan born about 1817-1818 and Sarah born about 1829-1830, would both have been born before the Hopkin Jenkins / Anne Aubrey wedding. Are you sure it's the right marriage?

Ooohhhhh... this needs looking at in the morning! I just found this on the IGI, remembering that they assume that all Welsh people used the patronymic system before a certain date:
Hopkin Lazarus christened 2 Feb 1794 Saint Nicholas, Glamorgan, father Lazarus Jenkin.

I know it's a few years too early and it could well just be a coincidence, but worth investigating.
(Edit - actually, it's right for his age on the 1841 census when he is age 45-49 and he seems to have knocked some years off his age after that)

Hmmm, I found this website:
http://web.me.com/dearmanmollett/Dearman_Mollett_Family/Jenkins.html

The Turbeville bit keeps making me think of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, but looking at the Jenkin(s) bit, I found some other baptisms for children of Lazarus Jenkin at St Nicholas:
Thomas 12 Apr 1778
William 20 May 1781
Margaret and Jennett 17 May 1788

William being born in 1781 matches the William on the website, so it does look as if Lazarus Jenkin's children went by the surname of Jenkins, not Lazarus. So "Hopkin Lazarus" could well be your Hopkin Jenkins.

It might be worth you clicking on "Contact" and sending the website owner an email.

Thank you Kite - I am now going to look into all of that and no I am not one hundred percent certain that the marriage is correct. However, I was not overly concerned about the dates of birth of the children, given that so many illegitimates etc. have turned up in this tree!!

I will send an email to the owner of that site and see what comes out of that - it's funny because I kept spotting the name Lazarus when researching Hopkin so will go back and have a much closer look.

Our town crier goes by the name of Turberville..........and he is Welsh!

Well Kite, I can find absolutely no other candidate for that IGI record of Hopkin Lazarus in 1841 and there is only the one possible one for Hopkin Jenkins.

It looks very likely that it is the right chap doesn't it, and the specific area of St. Nicholas is another good pointer.

I have sent an email to that web site, but may have to wait some time for a reply because they do warn about that on the site. It will just be interesting to hear about their sources etc.

Yes, I'm sure it must be him but it would be nice to find some evidence to back it up. I had a look at the Welsh wills index but I didn't find anything on there.
