I have known for a long time that my Grandad was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and, in fact, was the only Private in the 13th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade to be awarded the MSM in WW1.

I knew Grandad was in Ypres; I have been there and have "trodden in his footsteps".

What I did not know - until today - was the reason for the MSM: for sustained good work; nor did I know that he had fought in the battles of the Somme, Arras, Vimy Ridge, and Cambrai, and that he was present at the entry into Mons on Armistice Day - and all this I now know because this is in The National Roll of the Great War, which can be seen in the ancestry site, find my past and family relatives.com.

I am very, very lucky.:)

My great uncle Frank Phillips was also in the 13 Bn Rifle Brigade, but he was killed in France in September 1918 and is buried at Hermies Hill.
