Left BK6 well alone after reading this thread!

Aaaaggghhhh!

I am just working forward with Joel Maynard and have got to the 1881 census record for him.

Shows

Joel 54 b Kempston Beds
Hannah wife 58 b Shefford Beds
two adult daughters
Elizabeth Goodman widow mother 78 b Kempston

Now, Joel's mother appears up to 1871 as Elizabeth Maynard - her details are recorded as follows:

1841 illegible age - with husband, John, who died in 1844
1851 55 b Kempston
1861 64 b Wootton
1871 75 b Wootton

I am sure they are all the same (correct) person as she is always living with one or other of her children in those census records. I had then bumped her off in 1873 Q2 as there was a suitable death reg aged 76 with no other Elizabeth Maynards of that sort of age in the district in 1871.

The obvious answer is that Elizabeth Goodman is Joel's mother-in-law. I know that Joel's wife was Hannah Watts and she was a spinster at marriage in 1846. Her father was Thomas Watts a labourer. I can't find her in 1841 to see if she had a step-mother, but her real mother seems to have been Martha:

Name: Hannah Watts
Gender: Female
Baptism/Christening Date: 27 Jun 1820
Baptism/Christening Place: WILSHAMSTEAD,BEDFORD,ENGLAND
Father's Name: Thomas Watts
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C02169-3
System Origin: England-ODM
Source Film Number: 1279191
Reference Number:
Collection: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

Hannah says she was born in Wilshamstead on two or three censuses out of the five I have her on.

So, who the blinky-flip is Elizabeth Goodman? Answers on a postcard please :D

No idea?????????

Can't see any Goodman/Watts marriages on FreeBMD.

There is a Goodman/Maynard 1881 but it's Matilda and George.

There's a Hannah Watts aged 19 in 1841 but she isn't with any other Watts.

It's in Wilshamstead, Bedford.............is that a likely place??

That's where she was baptised, so I should think that is her! Thanks.

It looks like Elizabeth Goodman is living next door to Joel Maynard in 1851. She's older but born in Kempson with a niece Caroline Maynard

Stop it! lol

That's a different one....................................... I think!!

Erm....

Caroline Maynard was the dau of William Maynard who is also living nextdoor to her. William has a sister named Elizabeth Maynard and she married Reuben Goodman in 1830, so she is the aunt to Caroline. Reuben is back at home with Elizabeth in 1861, but he died in 1863. I had bumped that Elizabeth off in 1871.

Elizabeth Maynard who married Reuben Goodman was Joel Maynard's aunt.

Hmmmm...I suppose someone might have got confused about the relationships and ages and maybe she is Reuben's widow all along. I can't find her in 1871 though. The death reg I had was for Q2 1871 which was also bothering me a bit as there's more chance of person dying in that Q being on the census than not.

Oooh, I need a large glass of wine now, but it's a bit early.....

Ah...I have that on one census. A sister of the head being recorded as mother-in-law which is bizarre. If you can't find this Elizabeth on any other census it's fairly likely it's misrecorded isn't it.

Is it ever too early for a large glass of wine:)

Oh yes, I've got a couple on one census as father- and mother-in-law who are really the parents of the head's sister's husband!

I wouldn't have moved to Bedfordshire if I'd known it was such a hotbed of confusion.
