I have three different references to Charlotte Place (early 19th century) and would like them all to be the same place, but after hunting on maps I'm not sure. They are: St Pancras, Fitzroy Square and Rathbone Place. Is there a London expert who can tell me whether all these Charlotte Places are the same, please?

Not got an answer, but Fitzroy Square and Rathbone Place are at either end of Charlotte Street on my A - Z and I think it would have been in Pancras district.

... and Charlotte Place is just to the west of Rathbone Street which is near Fitzroy Square.

If you street google you can see it's proximity to Rathbone and Fitzroy.

So I think you both agree with my thinking that the Rathbone Street and Fitzroy Square Charlotte Streets are the same (sorry, I originally asked about Charlotte Place - my mistake). I think I'll have to assume St Pancras is also right, although I'm not entirely certain on that one - it certainly seems to be in roughly the right area.

Thanks both of you,

Charlotte Street can be seen on google maps here:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=gay+hussar&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=gay+hussar&cid=0,0,15605534630844490348&ei=kDnETJ2nKoyuvgP7_eTYCA&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&resnum=2&ved=0CCgQnwIwAQ

It is a continuation of Fitzroy Street, which leads south from Fitzroy Square, and as Charlotte Street it runs into Rathbone Place.

Thanks Nell - does that mean it's in St Pancras? Or, rather, would it have been in St Pancras in 1817?

I don't think so, I think it would be Westminster, but I can't seem to find an online map that would say. The area around Charlotte Street is Bloomsbury.

Genuki page about Bloomsbury here: http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/MDX/Bloomsbury/index.html

It was in St Pancras in 1903 http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/MDX/StPancras/outline.htm

It's one of those odd places around here, because it's on the boarder with everywhere it can hop about a bit. So Part of it is in Camden now and Part of it Westminster

Those are useful links, Nell and peppie, thanks. On balance I now think I'm safe in thinking that my three Charlotte Streets are the same place. I'm glad about that as I can now place someone who went missing from Gloucestershire as a cordwainer in London for much of his life, before writing his will as a 'gentleman' when he was 89.
