Does anyone have an idea on how to determine who lived at a particular address in Bristol in 1917?
I have just found a WWI record of enlistment in the Australian Army for a great Uncle and he lists his next of kin, his mother, at this address: Mrs Amy Ziegeler, 16 Bouverie Street, Easton, Bristol, England.
Amy came to Queensland in 1882 and no-one living knew that she had returned to England at any time after that. I assume it was to visit one of her sisters but in the middle of the war. How extraordinary.
I have run out of ideas as to how to research her arrival in or departure from England at this time or who lived at that address.
Any clue where I from here?

You could try emailing Bristol Library:

http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/content/Leisure-Culture/Libraries/central-library-family-history-and-local-studies.en;jsessionid=DE1554C65B370A2783514F05DEA5 5EB0.tcwwwaplaws1

to ask them if they could check the first available electral roll after 1917 (none produced during wartime), but this will only give you anyone eligible to vote. The head of house may also be in any street directory for the time. Presumably knowing the surname of the family would be a help to know which sister it was?!

I see they say there may be a charge, but if you stress you only need the one addy for one year (fingers crossed!) then you may get away with that!!

In 1911 the names are James and Kate Cross and two children and separately at the same addy Emily Carreyett aged 54. (that's the transcription spelling). Emily is nee Salter from Melksham Wilts by the look of it.

Kelly's Directory of Bristol for 1914 gives James Cross as being the householder at 16 Bouverie Street.

Amy is on the 1901 census for England and in 1903 she is in Australia, so that's a times frame for her coming here.

She's also on the 1913 electoral roll and the 1930 so that ties with her being in UK in 1917.

Was Amy British born? If not, she would have had to sign on as an Alien in 1917.

Bit of a spanner.........the Amy in 1901 is married to William (says born London, OC)

The Amy in Aus is married to Bertram????? Or is that her son??? The electoral rolls don't give relationships.

Is it Amy Amanda Ziegeler???

That's the one in Aus. If so, she went to England in 1925, so she must have gone twice if she was there in 1917.

Ther's a Bertram Henry William Ziegeler born Qld 1886. Parents Carl Theodor Ziegeler and Amy Shultz.

That's the family in the electoral rolls here. Not sure about the 1901 family of William and Amy???

I'd say the 1901 family is a different one. No sign of Bert there.

By coincidence, or otherwise, there's a Desmond J Ziegeler marrying in Bristol in 1919.

Amy was born in London, so she would not have had to register upon her return. (Good thing to know though, thanks.)
She married Carl Theodor Ziegeler at Mackay, Queensland in 1882 shortly after her arrival. Her maiden name was Schutz, often misspelled as Schultz.
Bertram Henry William Ziegeler was her son as was Desmond Johann Ziegeler. It is a fair certainty that it was he who married in Bristol in 1919. His enlistment papers show him returning in September 1919. Thanks for that, Merry, I would never have thought to look, and it is interesting that the family always thought he remained unmarried all his life. Also thanks for the Bristol Library connection.
Thanks too for the quick surfing from HarrysMum. I wonder where you learned she was in England in 1925 as well as 1917? I haven't a clue where to find such information. That was Amy who died in Mackay in 1931.
I have no previous mention of the James Cross that scuda and Merry found at that address nor an Emily Carreyett. Maybe this address was a boarding house. Possible, I suppose. Amy had been a paid housekeeper all of her working life, before and after her husband died, so maybe she was working in that household. Too much speculation, I guess.
Thanks all.

Ammanda.....I have just checked Ancestry and it's a Annie A Ziegeler who goes to London in 1925. The other site I checked had Amy A............

I can't find any Amy Ziegeler going to England at all......maybe records from war years aren't on the web yet??

I did find the childrens' births but you probably have them.

Adolph 1884
Bertram 1886
Carolina 1888
Desmond 1891
Fritz
1897
Garlieb 1900.
