This lot are driving me mad - they seem to have vanished without trace.

In 1841 they are at Brookside in Duffield in Derbyshire:

Jane Wainwright 45 Dressmaker
Jane Wainwright 15 Dressmaker
Matilda Wainwright 10
Sarah Wainwright 5

I am given to understand that Jane's husband William died earlier in the year, or possibly in 1840. None of them were apparently born in Derbyshire, which is a bit strange as that part of the county has more Wainwrights than you can shake a stick at.

The younger Jane married George Marshall in Derby in SQ 1844 and can be traced through all the censuses up to 1891. Sometimes she says she was born in Derby, sometimes in Gloucester. There was a Jane Wainwright baptised in Gloucester 27 July 1823, which I suppose could be her.

I can't find her mother or her sisters after 1841. I wondered if mother had married again and they were all known by another name, but I haven't been able to find anything.

It's all a bit vague, but I have been sitting here for an hour and can't get a start. Anyone up for a challenge?

I'm not sure what to make of this - it shouldn't be right, but needs further investigation, probably to eliminate once and for all....

Marriages Sep 1849
Buxton William Belper 19 421
Fretwell Ann Sarah Belper 19 421
King William Belper 19 421 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Wainwright Jane Belper 19 421 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

This is the above couple on the 1851 census, but looking at them they shouldn't be yours:

because Jane is ten years too young and born in Derbyshire. Amongst the children there is a dau Elizabeth Wainwright aged 11. I hoped to eliminate this group by finding one year old Elizabeth on the prev census with her family, but I can't find her! I'm not helped by not being able to read the place of birth for Elizabeth as I don't know much about Derbyshire :o

Which is in Alfreton?

I've looked through the 1841 Alfreton census for Elizabeths and Janes and Wainwrights with no success finding them. There's no birth reg for Elizabeth Wainwright either.

Yes, Riddings was in the civil parish of Alfreton. I can't see them either.

Jane Wainwright who married Mr King was still too young in 1861!
