If the prbate records on Ancestry show someone left "under 100,000 pounds", would that mean it was close to that amount??

Blow...............still, might be worth getting just to see what was given away.

I think it does mean it was close to that amount.

I would expect it to be near. If you scout around the index for the year you should get an idea of what increments they were using at that time.

The increments presumably related to the death duty tariff in force at the time.

Thanks........it's my dreaded Edward Clark died 1876.

I'd just love to know if some of the property is the same as that in the will of his late mother-in-law, Elizabeth Ariel. Her will was declared invalid after Mr Clark came into the family.

Worth buying methinks.....

The will won't necessarily tell you what the property was, though.

Have you looked on the 1873 return of land on ancestry Libby? That should tell you how much land he owed and the rental value?

Not sure how it works though as some of my big families don't show up on there and I know they owned land - perhaps they only appear on there if they rent it out to other people?

No Tom, I haven't.....

I know this family had money to start with.......but this fellow was the husband of my Agatha.

For those who don't know........(all those who do, should leave now)

Myles Ariel of Bristol married Elizabeth Naylor of Cleckheaton Yorkshire in 1815.

Elizabeth Naylor was the only living child of George Naylor and Elizabeth Eyre (all from Yorkshire).

Now Elizabeth Ariel is left a swag of money and property by her mother.

Elizabeth Ariel dies in 1837 and leaves a will. The will uses the same solicitors as her hsbane uses so you'd think it was legit.

1839 Myles Ariel remarries Lucretia Clark.
1839 Agatha Ariel (daughter of Myles and Eliz) marries Edward Clark (brother of Lucretia).

1839 Elizabteh Ariels will is declared "intestate". ??

1840 Myles Ariel drops dead and leaves everything to Lucretia (except 5000 pounds to each of his children given to them after Lucretia dies).

1845 Agatha and Edward Clark divorce.

So...I'm interested in Edward Clark's will.

Lucretia doesn't die until 1889 and leaves very little.

Of Myles and Elizabeth's children, only Mary is still alive. As she scarpers to Italy in the early 1890s and marries a widower, I'd say she got her 5000 pounds.

The couple I have sent for it has been quite close to the amount. Note that the left amount is after death duties have been paid so he may have been worth more originally. My great grandmother's will was estate under £10.000. (actually about £10,500 with about £1,000 paid in death duties. She left several houses to her children in the hope that they would live in them and they were valued for probate but not sold.

Here's an old thread!

Libby, did you ever get a copy of Edward's will?

HarrysMum

Yes Merry I got that one. It's was pages long and said nothing. To my son, grandson etc

Nothing interesting.

I think I know what happened to all Edward's children except Julia.

I hadn't realised some of them ended up in the Weymouth area like Mary Bompiani! Maybe I should have been looking for their graves too?!!

Myles Ariel Clark married Mary Ann Elizabeth Rockett June 1868.
Edward Podmore Clark married Agnes Mary Rockett Sep 1868.

Both in Axebridge.

Daddy Rockett (Hugh) was some bigwig in law.....Chief Magistrate or something.

One girl married a Mercer and died in Weymouth and another one died there, but I've forgotten who that was (unless I'm thinking of husband and wife?!)

HarrysMum

Not sure Merry.

Rosalie Eyre Clark married John Devenish and died Weymouth 1916.

I might fork out for a few more of these wills.

Ancestry has Julia marrying a Woodbridge

Ooooh.......better get some more wills.

Where did you find Grace's marriage???

John HOPPUS (I love that...lol) Devenish was a brewer (how appropriate). There are a few news articles about him that mention a Mercer as well.

I have Edward Clark's (Aggie's OH)will. I also have a few of the Brock family wills on the offchance anyone I knew was mentioned. Hanry Clark was the doctor, Edward's brother. His daughter, Lucretia Jenkins Clark married Osmond de Beauvoir Brock.
Mary Bompiani mentions him in her will.
I can't remember if I have any wills of Agatha's sons. If I do, they were boring...lol

I'll check.

If it had been Hertfordshire he might have been a rose grower instead.
