My GGF William Ponting was born 13/08/1871 in Marlborough.

I can't find him in 1901 or 1911

This is the census info I do have:
1881 - 12 Kingsbury Square, Marlborough, Wilts
1891 - Preshute, Wiltshire
1901 - U/K his wife and children were in Wales.

It has been suggested to me by a distant cousin he may have been transported but he lived too late for that. I have a possible death in December 1936 and am waiting for the cert.

Any help availble please?

What was his occupation, Rosie?

There's a death in Tasmania in 1899 for a William Ponting aged 26. Has no parents so possibly someone who 'took off' rather than transported.

I think the possible death you've found is for a different William.

There's a William Pontin aged 38 living in Hungerford Registration District in 1911 & I think it's more likely that's his death.

sorry for delay, trying to sort out a puter problem at the same time!

William was a labourer. Not particularly helpful I know.

Jay I can't find a WP death in Hungerford in 1911 on free BMD?

Jay said there was a different one LIVING in Hungerford in 1911 who could belong to the death you found!

Does his name have a G on the end?

Rosie Knees

misunderstood duh! lol. The death I found was without the G although the name does change over time with/without.

In 1911 his wife was in Salisbury Row Hungerford and calls herself 'wife'. This is why I'm suspicious about him.

Right,

William's birth cert - Pontin
Marriage cert - Ponting
(no death cert yet)
1881 census - Ponting
1891 census - Ponting

no sign on 1901

Can't find any William Pontin* b1871 +/- 2 in 1911.

oh dear, there is a death age 38 in 1906.

2 aged 49 in 1921

1 aged 64 in 1933

all of which roughly fit but are around the country, then the one in 1936 in Hungerford.

*wibbles* To buy or not to buy;(

I'm off for a couple of days, but...............I'm still going with the transportation story being half true............

Now could your fellow have got into a bit of trouble and scarpered down under. My g uncle did that.......thought he'd killed a soldier and took off. It was Ireland and he didn't, but stories grow.......lol

If you haven't found anything, I'd see if there is anymore on that Tasmanian one.

There is a William Ponting born NSW but I've killed him off.

Hi Rosie
Just wondering if you have any Lookers (Marlborough) or Bances (Hungerford)
My gt gt gt grandparents are Looker and Bance

Libby, I've searched the Times Archive but that only goes up to about 1913. Googled his name with various additions (marlborough/hungerford/wiltshire) all to no avail. Are there any passenger lists to Tasmania? I'll have a google on that one.

Rachel, no Lookers or Bances. Got Smith if that's any good lol.

Had another look at the 1911 using +/- 3 years and have found that potential WP but that's where I'm stuck.

That's a shame, I'm still looking for something linking my lot to the Wiltshire riots of 1830

Ooooer I have a solitary Smith in my tree, born in London and she's not connected to anyone at all. Haven't a clue what she's doing there ;(

Oooooooo Rosie .... who do you have ? :)

Seriously I'd be interested to know as I hope to link my Isaac Looker (3x gt grandpa) to the Isaac and Edward Looker who were on trial 1830

Do you have the birth certs for the Ponting MMN Aston births in 1912 & 1914? Is William listed as the father? Was he the informant?

Rachel, it was George Liddiard my GGGG GF. He was a blacksmith of Aldbourne Wilts and served 18 months' hard labour in Reading gaol. I'm surprised it wasn't more servere as I would have thought he would have been expected to 'know better'!

that'll be William G and Walter J E? No I haven't but my mum's sister told me once, almost verbatim "William was a farm worker. He and Mary lived in a farm cottage in Hungerford. He must have died quite young as after his death Mary 'took up' with William Edwards and had two sons with him, William and Joe".

Wm's first child Matilda Alice was born 1895 Marlborough and Wm is named as father so must have been there at registration (?).

His second child Victoria Agatha May (my GM) was born Bath Workhouse 26/05/1900 William is not named on the cert but I've got the baptismal record dated 21/06/1901 which lists parents Mary and William Ponting, abode 'workhouse'. Not sure if Wm would have to be present to be named?

May married Frank Smith on 27/06/1927. I've just checked the cert and (can you hear the light switch coming on?) her father Wm Ponting was deceased!

Thanks for getting me to do this Jay lol. I've now looked at Matilda Alice's marriage cert (22/07/1924) and it doesn't say that Wm was deceased. I know that's no guarantee but at least I know now not to order that 1936 death Cert:eek:

*must be more methodical, must be more methodical* I said I was rusty.

Going to think and digest now.

no deaths anywhere in the country that fit 1924-1928 on freeBMD or Ancestry.

there are some England and Wales criminal registers in Wiltshire/Somerset on Ancestry but I've only got the smallest package so can't see 'em.

oh grrrr! I've checked Ancestry 'matches' and there are four trees which mention him (with his parents' names) but there's not much point contacting them as they all last logged in over 6 months ago. sigh
