I have tried many times over the years to "kill off" George and Ann Green.

They are on the 1841 census for Clifton, Beds with their children. Aged 40.

In 1851 one of the children, Sarah, together with a boy called Samuel aged 7 are living with who I believe are relations of their mothers in Arlsey. On the census it says parish relief after their names.

I have had Bedford RO do a search for their deaths in the past to no avail.

Just wondered if there is any way of tracing the parish relief records to see if there is any information to see what happened to their parents.

Problem being there are no ages given in the death indexes before 1866.

Looking at the 1841 census, they are in Biggleswade registration district.

Thanks Marg, I have gone through those in the past, by the parish records and discounted them by age.

It's a real mystery, but I will plug on.

I just had a brainwave that the relief records may show something, I had copies of those for my Gadens in the orphan houses in Bristol and gave such a lot of information.

They must have died in a different registration district I suppose.

Have you had a look at the BLARS online catalogue to see what they've got? This seems to be the starter page: http://www.bedfordshire.gov.uk/CommunityAndLiving/ArchivesAndRecordOffice/SummaryofArchiveHoldings.aspx

Were the burials you found in the right parish then? I only ask as I guess with nearly 30 parishes in Biggleswade you didn't need to check all of them to find the burials. I would be highly suspicious of ages given in 1841. My ggg-grandfather aged over nearly 30 years between 1841 and 1846 (his death). I'm just wondering if you did find one or both the deaths but it wasn't obvious?

*prepares to be told the burials were for children* :o

Thanks UJ, been looking on that earlier, the BLARS site used to be very good, but had no luck.

Also had a look on genuki. That page hadn't been updated since 2001 !

I think I ma e mail the RO tomorrow and ask their advice.

I have found this line very interesting George's ancestors were millers, bakers, etc. Have found wills and all sorts in the past, but Georges father seems to have been the black sheep maybe, his two brothers were left the mill. I'm quite interested to start digging on this lot again.

Some were Merry. It's some years since i did quite a lot on this line. Just fancied trying again to sort George and Ann out.

Ann was married before George and had a 15 year old daughter living with them on the 1841, so I think the ages are fairly good.

Her maiden name was Kitchiner, 1st marriage name Lewington.

They are the parents of my gt.gt.grandfather William Green, who I have on the 1911 in Poplar - from memory - and can't find his death either, with a name like Green it's a nightmare.

So William Kitchener from Hinxworth Herts should be Ann's brother? I see his parents were John and Ann, but his siblings were bap in Hinxworth through to 1807, but with a fair gap around the date Ann was born. Of course there's a bap for an Ann at St Marylebone in London (same named parents) nicely fitting in the gap (1803) ................. Your Ann said she was b in Beds, didn't she? Annoying! lol

If they have moved to a different parish and claimed relief there might be a settlement order or church relief records.
