Harry Veal that is.

I have Harry on the 1871 census (RG10; Piece: 2174; Folio: 10; Page: 12) with his grandparents, Henry and Hannah Barnes, and no where else.

According to the census he was born abt 1861 in London Middlesex.

I found a birth ref on freebmd for a Harry James George Veal
Birth: Jun 1860 - Kensington, Greater London, London, Middlesex but I don't know for sure if this is my Harry. I also can't find this Harry anywhere either.

I think Harry may be the son of Ann Barnes, who only appears on the 1851 census (HO107; Piece: 1889; Folio: 369; Page: 13), although Ann has a sister Mary.

Can anyone help find Harry?

There is a Harry James Veal marrying a Susanna Barnes 13th June 1859 St Peter Notting Hill (London). Susanna is 21 and her father is Henry Barnes, plasterer. One of the witnesses is Martha Barnes. Could Harry and Susanna be the parents of your Harry?

Harry James Veal, widower, then married Anne Orchard, spinster, at St Andrew & St Philip, Kensington, 2nd May 1873. Harry James is 19 on the first marriage in 1859 and 35 on this one. Likely death Oct-Dec 1901 in Marylebone, age 59. But the only death I can see for Susanna is in 1865 in Ely.

This is Harry James Veal in 1881:
17 St James St., Marylebone
Henry Jas Veal Head Mar 39 Plumber Middx Clerkenwell
Jane Veal Wife Mar 35 Gloucestersh Doddington
Ada Emily Veale Daughter 7 Middx Paddington
Arthur Jane(???!) Veal Son 5 Do Do
Mary B Veal Daur 4 Do Marylebone
Albert W Veal Son 2 Do Do
Ellen F Veal Daur 6w Do Do

There is a Susanna Barnes christening on FamilySearch Record Search, 26 June 1836, at Winsford, Somerset, parents Henry and Hannah, but I can't find them in 1841 to make sure they're the same couple as in 1871. In 1851 Susanna is away from home in domestic service, but she does give her birthplace as Minehead, the same as Ann and Mary, so I would reckon she is their sister.

Sorry, still not found Harry jr anywhere!

Sorry Kate, been feeding the children.

I haven't found Henry and Hannah on the 1841 so they may have other children. I'll have another look.

It would make sense as Ann seems to have disappeared.

I wonder if there are other children. I also have a Ruth Hunt to find out about too.

I can't find Henry or Hannah on the 1841, nor Susannah or Ann either. I have tried Barnes and Barns and looked for anything that might be a mistranscription.

Henry was a farm labourer on all census I can find so I wonder if Susannah is part of this family or if she lied or he changed careers several times between census.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Looking at the witnesses to Harry and Susanna's marriage, this looks like Martha on the 1861 census:
3 Park Terrace, Albert Road, Lewisham, Kent
FitzMaurice family plus
Martha Barnes Serv Un 23 General Servant Somersetsh Winsford

Oh, and I remembered to look at other online Somerset PR transcriptions and found the full transcription for Susanna's baptism and it does say Labourer for her father:
http://www.wsom.org.uk/Registers/WndBap18301850.htm

Then Martha's baptism is on the same page, 11th Feb 1838.

And looking at the Minehead baptisms, Ann was baptised in 1840 and Mary in 1842, so the family should be in Minehead in 1841, don't you think?

Sorry kate, not been round for a while. Minehead would make sense for them to be living there.

I'll try to look later to see if I can find Minehead census and pinpoint the family. I'm sure they have been mistranscribed.
