I've found this family in 1881 at Soapery, Workington:
Thomas Holmes Head Mar 40 Shipwright Cumberland
Sarah Holmes Wife Mar 35 Wife Cumberland
William Holmes Son 10 Scholar Cumberland
John Robinson Holmes Son 6 Scholar Cumberland
Allan Robinson Holmes Son 2 Cumberland

Their marriage is 2 Dec 1867 Workington, Thomas Holmes son of William Holmes and Sarah Robinson daughter of John Robinson who is on the same 1881 census page as them. Her full name was Sarah Mary Ann Robinson and she was born in Workington in 1845. I have her with the Robinson family on the 1861 census and I have the Robinson family in 1871, but I can't find Thomas and Sarah Holmes in 1871, nor after 1881. I don't know whether William Holmes should be on the 1871 census because there are two possible births, one before the census and one after!

John Robinson Holmes married Isabella Henderson 4 Oct 1900 in Workington and I have found that couple on the 1901 census with baby son Allan Robinson Holmes (he died soon after the census). But what happened to the rest of the Holmeses?

Ooh, that's funny, I just found John Robinson Holmes in Cockermouth with his family on the 1911 census and he has Allan Robinson Holmes age 10 with him. I guess the one who died in 1901 was another one! It's just John, Isabella, and their children though, no other Holmeses with them.

I don't suppose that 1911 entry could be one of those where they wrote in the names of their children who had died? Does anyone know whether the children's names in those entries are still listed on the index or not?

I found a death for the first Allen Robinson Holmes in 1890 age 11 (John Robinson Holmes's brother).

Still can't find Thomas and Sarah in 1871, with or without William.

1911 says 5 children, 4 living and 1 dead.

There are 5 children listed. PM your email addy and I'll sent it to you.

They've been married 10 years
