I am trying to locate an image of my ancestor the Reverend Joseph Charnock who was vicar at Heptonstall Church (West Yorkshire) from 1803 to 1847 - I understand there is a portait of him hanging in the vestry? Is anyone able to help me?

In Pigot's directory of 1834 he is named as the master of Heptonstall Grammar School (Genuki http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Halifax/Halifax34.html) . This is now a museum so I wouldn't be surprised if they have access to a picture of him:

Hi, we did actually visit the museum last year but they didn't have a picture displayed. I will actually contact them though, as they may have a picture not displayed!!

I have also tried contacting the current vicar - but no luck to date!!

Thanks for the idea

St Thomas Heptonstall - the one near the museum. There is the ruin of the old church next to the new one that was built around 1847. I visited the area last year, but it was before i managed to prove that I was related to Joseph Charnock. I obtained his will in the end, which mentions my great great grandfather Robert Bates Sugden as benefiting from his estate! Robert Bates was his grandson through his daughter Martha Charnock!

Attached is taken from a pamphlet that my aunt gave me, next to Joseph Charnock is written very faintly in pencil a tree showing how my grandmother believed we were related to him - it's clearer on the original!

My grandmother also believed that Charlotte Bronte based the character of the evil vicar in Jane Eyre on Joseph Charnock, although I understand scholars believe that to be someone else!!!!

lol Rachel!

Have you tried contacting the Hebden Bridge History Society? They might well be willing to check out the painting.

I have emailed loads of people and lost track now!!

Thought someone might be interested in the publication I have from 1947 about the church and might be interested in an exchange of information!

I'll keep going and I will try your suggestion, although I suspect I may have already contacted them!

Thanks for your help!

I think they hold quite a few documents re Joseph Charnock at the West Yorkshire Archive library, that's where I got the copy of his will from!
