I think it says Br in l - brother in law, Allan. He's travelling with Albert Drake above him and Ethel and Gladys below him. Ethel and Gladys are both described as "sisters". Is one of them possibly William's sister and married to Albert?

A William E Oakes married a Margaret F Drake in 1917 in Kings Norton district in 1917. I don't know if that relationship would work??

if this is Margaret F Drake:

Births Mar 1895
Drake Margaret Florence Northleach 6a 389

then I've found her on the 1901 census and she has siblings Ethel 10, Albert 3 and Gladys 1 (amongst others). However, I'm a little unsure whether Georgette meant Ethel and Gladys were Drake or Oakes?

They are Drakes, Merry. I thought as he was down as brother in law and travelling with three Drakes then maybe either Ethel or Gladys was his sister and married to Albert and that there had been a confusion in the relationships on the passenger list.

Margaret isn't on the list with them - I wonder if she died?

I'm not having any luck with her death in the UK at all. There's a Margaret Florence Oakes coming into Liverpool from Canada in 1937, but she is only 37 years of age.

Perhaps she travelled separately? Is the passenger list from FMP?

No, it's Ancestry. Here it is : http://search.ancestry.ca/browse/view.aspx?dbid=7488&iid=NYT715_3095-0534&pid=4026306079&ssrc=&fn=William+E&ln=Oakes&st=g

I'll have a look for her on there later when I get back from the school run :)
