In baptism registers there's a column "by whom the ceremony was performed", and it's usually the vicar/rector/curate of either that parish or a nearby one, but I've come across an entry for my g-grandfather Charles Knight, baptised in Swinford, Leicestershire on 29th August 1886 by "R. Seddon, headmaster of Lutterworth Grammar School". Has anyone any idea why the headmaster would have been performing a baptism?

Google found me a page which says he (Seddon) was Curate of Horsham 1892-5. Will see if I can find out more...

If you have a sub or some credits on findmypast, they have the clergy list for 1896 which has a Robt Seddon and a Rd Toller Seddon listed - 5 credits to view each.

Thanks for that, I have got a sub for FMP. The entry is thus:

Seddon, Robt. M.A. Dub. [funny symbol a bit like a back to front y] 1870, cur. 1892, Horsham, Sussex.

I'm guessing the funny symbol probably means the year he was ordained, since if he was baptising someone in 1886 it's hardly likely to have been his year of birth?
