There's a marriage on the Ancestry LMA records on 8th December 1842 at St George the Martyr, Southwark between John Glessing, widower, 45, musical string manufacturer and Harriet Cox, 29, spinster. Both of Union Street. Father Willam Cox but no occupation given. Doesn't help with the Plymouth connection I'm afraid.

The 1851 census has her as a widow and born at Blackfriars, Surrey c. 1814.

I'll keep looking.

There is a Plymouth connection - in 1871 Harriet was living there with her granddaughter, daughter of Harriet Henrietta Rawson. (Harriet married George Rawson a butcher in 1859).

GLESSING, Harriet Head F 53 1818 Surrey
RAWSON, Emily Granddaughter F 8 1863 London

RG number: RG10 Piece: 2114 Folio: 11 Page:15

Wellington Street, Charles, Plymouth County:
Devonshire

I don't think that Harriet senior had the extra name Henrietta - I believe that belonged to daughter (or step-daughter??) Harriet. The younger Harriet was born in 1837 so whose daughter is she? As the marriage found wasn't until 1842.

Something odd in 1841:

GLESSING, John M 40 1801 Middlesex
GLESSING, Harriet F 20 1821 Middlesex
GLESSING, John M 5 1836 Middlesex
GLESSING, Harriet F 3 1838 Middlesex
GLESSING, Sophia F 2 1839 Middlesex

GLESSING, Eliza F 15 1826 Middlesex

Two Harriets, one only about 20 and a new baby. Is this Harriet Cox before her marriage? The older children can't be hers and when John married he was a widower!

What happened to wife no. 1?

OOOH!

I have looked on the NBI -

an ANN GLESSING was buried on 11th NOVEMBER 1842 at Christchurch, Spitalfields, AGED 40!!

And John and Harriet married on 8th December 1842 at St George the Martyr, Southwark !!!

Where was Ann on the 1841 census?

I suppose I should check that this Ann is actually John's wife - can't find a marriage so far.

This might be her in 1861

Wherever Ann was, the younger Harriet was baptised on Dec 3rd 1837 as Harriet Henrietta Glessing, daughter of John and Harriet Glessing (John a musical string maker) at Christ Church Spitalfields

And John Glessing was baptised on 29th May 1836 to John and Harriet

There are various children baptised between 1823 and 1829 to John and Ann

Jackie, I'm glad you could find those - I don't have Ancestry and therefore no access to the London records.

Jackie, I'm glad you could find those - I don't have Ancestry and therefore no access to the London records.

They're really useful for London.

There is an 1822 marriage between John Glessing and Ann Nevell but I don't know if this is of any use to the Zazie.

Jackie, I had Ancestry when the LMA records were put on-line so luckily I was able to search for all my family in London. I'll probably take out another Ancestry sub in a few months but I'm really busy with other research at present and FMP is very good for the censuses.

Many many thanks to all here!

I'll tell you what I know so far:
John Glessing had a son called (also) John Glessing. John 1 was married x3 (Caroline, Susannah, Mary); John 2 was married x2 - second time to Harriet Cox. He/they had six kids - John 3 (did people lack imagination or what?), Harriet Henrietta, Caroline, Emmeline and Rosetta.
HHC1 lived with her daughter Rosetta in Plymouth, who was married to Alfred Brooks.

However, it is the Plymouth connection via Harriet Cox's father William that I am looking for, as the others are (more or less) known (thanks to Sarah D - elsewhere).

Again, thank you for your kindnesses,

Zazie

This is really interesting! But I am confused.

Henry Irvine was my ggg . . . something or other grandfather. He ran off with Sophia Glessing. I need to tie up some dates here, which is hard when so many share the same first name . . .!

Ah well, Elizabeth, nothing new there - read my other posting!!

ElizabethHerts
20-08-10, 12:37
Yes, I didn't comment on the Henry Irvine scenario, especially when I discovered that he married Sophia Josephine! In 1871 Henry and Sophia have 4 children.

Harriet the elder seems to have had a colourful life!

Zazie

Where did you find Henry and Sophia? Also, what names do the children have??

Again, many many thanks to you and Jackie.

Oh, yes, forgot to say . . . you didn't have to spare the feelings - we have all known about this. It was more about trying to make the links between the Glessings and Henry.

He lived until he was 108, from memory!
