For anyone with the same problem of being stuck in "new search" you resolve it by doing a search and then on the results page in the top right of the screen there is a link to go back to the old search

I hate it when that happens! lol I always stress in case they have got rid of the Old Search.

Does anyone actually USE the New Search?

No, it gives far too many possibles. It's rubbish.
