My gt x 3 grandparents James and Honor Broad had 8 children:

Mary b 1852 baptised 30 Nov 1864 St Columb
William b 1853 baptised 30 Nov 1864 St Columb
George 1856 baptised 30 Nov 1864 St Columb
James 1859
Eliza Ellen 1861 baptised 30 Nov 1864 St Columb
Elizabeth Ann 1864 baptised 1864 St Columb
Emma 1867 baptised 11 Jul 1867 St Columb
Katie 1871 baptised 18 May 1871 St Mawgan (Mawgan-in-Pydar)

In Elizabeth Ann's baptism the family abode is given as Whitewater (parish of Mawgan), which makes me wonder why they were all baptised in St Columb? Whitewater is a farm.

Katie was baptised 1871 in Mawgan-in-Pydar, by which time the family were living on Trevenna Farm.

So I wondered whether James had been baptised elsewhere. Re-checking Mawgan-in-Pydar I didn't find James' baptism - but I did find one for George in 1856!

The thing is - in the entries for the block baptisms in 1863, George, William and Mary are listed consecutively, followed by two unrelated baptisms, followed by Eliza. So was James baptised with this lot and then the vicar inadvertently missed him out?

And why was George baptised twice?

Or did James and Honor think that James was the one who'd been baptised instead of George?

Perhaps the vicar put George instead of James?

Both Kate and George's baptisms are on the IGI, Nell.

thanks Elizabeth.

Perhaps you're right and the vicar got the wrong name! Or maybe they handed the child over and gave vicar the wrong name by mistake!

I had Kate's baptism from there so was glad to confirm it with the images, but I hadn't looked for George. I think I was miffed I couldn't find Emma, who is my direct ancestor.

I also wondered why they called their 2nd son George? It wasn't a family name that I can discover and they can't have been sure they'd have another boy to give the father's name to. James' own father was John and they'd called their first son after Honor's father.

George and James have continued to cause problems - George disappears after 1881 and James after 1871.

Their elder sister Mary died intestate in 1925 and papers show that her estate was divided between her surviving siblings. George isn't mentioned but Jas. is so presumably he was still alive somewhere! Equally George must have died somewhere too!

I have a similar problem Nell. It would seem my g g grandparents had one daughter baptised twice.
The IGI has Mary Ann Northey born 26 Sept 1831 Christened 19 Oct 1831 at St Austell daughter of John and Agness. Batch No PO16511 They also show her being Christened along with her sister Jane Cox Northy on 5 Jan 1834 same batch number but this time the E is missing from NORTHEY, That is common so not worried over spelling.

I've looked at the original parish records now online and can't see the earlier entry.

I have also looked at the OPC site and they have Mary Ann Northy, same parents and date of birth being christened along with her sister Jane Cox Northy on 5 Jan 1834 but they don't show a christening at the earier time.
All very odd isn't it.

Are you sure there weren't two Georges, Nell?

Definite. Only one chap, born 1856.
