Can anyone find Shadrach Lewis after 1851?

He was born in Whitchurch, Glam about 1821. He married Elizabeth Hibbet in Pontypool, Mon in 1840. The birth place ties in with his siblings place of birth.

The 1841 census shows him at 18 Chatterton Square, St Mary Redcliff, Bristol, Glos
Shadrach Lewis 25 Smith
Oliver Lewis 60 Smith (his Father)
Elizabeth Lewis 25

Class: HO107; Piece 373; Book: 3; Civil Parish: St Marys Redcliff; County: Gloucestershire; Enumeration District: 7; Folio: 34; Page: 17

In 1851 his address is New Town, Ashford, Kent.

Shadrach Lewis 30 Blacksmith Born Whitchurch, Glam
Elizabeth Lewis 32 Born Rayland, Mon.

Class: HO107; Piece: 1621; Folio: 345; Page: 33; GSU roll: 193522.

After this census I can find no trace of him, neither can I find a death in the BMDs.

I have found a reference to a trial on 30/3/1850 at the Gloucester Spring Assizes where a Shadrach Lewis was found guilty of rape and sentenced to Transportation for life. However, further reports show this person was granted a free pardon in 1851 as the lady concerned – Mary Ann Bennett – was found guilty of perjury.

In the 1841 censuses, I have found another Shadrach Lewis, also in Bristol and age 10 and I think this must be the one who was on trial as the few clues given in the trial reports, would indicate the person on trial was him and not my Shadrach.

I cannot find either Shadrachs after 1851 and would appreciate any help to uncover what happened to mine. In searching, I have also found that Shadrach can be written, and transcribed in various ways, Shadrach, Shadrack, Shaderick etc.

I only have a sub to basic Ancestry so wondered if he emigrated.

Can anyone help please?

Pat

I've had absolutely no luck either.

Nor could I find Elizabeth with that birthplace.

You can see already that he has travelled. I think that New Town was thrown up temporarily while they were building railways etc there. He would be well placed to hear rumours of new jobs - what's the bet he worked on railways in India, Africa or Australia?

This might be him in the 1880 US census:

Daniel GUNTER Self Married White 70 WALES WALES WALES
Mary A. GUNTER Wife Married White 60 Keeping House WALES WALES WALES
Shadrech LEWIS Other Widower White 59 Blacksmith WALES WALES WALES

There are entries in 1860 and 1870 in Montgomery, Pennsylvania for him too, but I don't have full access to Ancestry worldwide to tell yuo who else is with him.

He's with an Elizabeth in 1860 but I can't tell for 1870.

Elizabeth was still there in 1870. I found the page image on Family Search Record Search. There were no children at this date (both in late 40s)

Merry and Pheonix, thank you so much. I will visit my local library, where I can get access to Ancestry worldwide, and see if I can find what you have found. The 1880 in the US certainly seems to fit.

Well done and thankyou.
