Henry was born, probably just prior to Civil Registration, probably Hoxton to Edward Stagg and Harriet, formerly Nash.

1841 - Barretts Buildings, close to High St Hoxton, aged 4
1851 - 7a Martha St Shordeitch - aged 13, with recently widowed mother, and his half-nephew Edward Bridden (actually Pridden)
1858 - marries Caroline Ann Wright, born Saffron Walden
1861 - 13 Urban Place Henry SMITH aged 23 Shoemake b Shoreditch (with Caroline b SW)
1871 - 13 Urban Place Henry Smith aged 33 Shoemaker b Shoreditch, with Caroline, nephew Humphrey Pridden, & boarder Peter Ward
1881 - 15 Tudor Grove South Hackney aged 42, Boot & shoe manuf. b Hoxton, with Caroline & nephew Humphrey Pridden
1891 - ????
1901 Hackney Union Workhouse aged 57 Boot maker own acc works at home b Hoxton

I have no idea why he changes his naame to Smith while living at Urban Place. I cannot find what happens to his mother, Harriet Stagg. And I cannot find him in 1891. Caroline continues to live at 15 Tudor Grove right up to 1911 (she finally dies aged 90!) with long term lodger Peter Ward.

Can anyone see Henry John Stagg (Smith) a boot or shoemaker in 1891?

There is a possible listed as Slagg on ancestry - I think it says Stagg on the image but it isn't very clear.

That explains why he said he was married in 1901 but Caroline was dec'd.

Erm, I don't see a marriage to Clara!

Phoenix said Caroline died in 1911, didn't she?

Oh, I missed that. I saw a death between 1881 and 1891 in Hackney and thought that was her.

Ooh well done both of you! I was trying to work through occupations on fmp, but was starting with boot....
Caroline went on till nearly 1930.

If you ever trace your Staggs back to Norfolk, I am related to a large family from Shipdham, I notice that on 1 census they had a 'visitor' born Norfolk, so there may turn out to be connection.

They are living in the right part of London to have come down East Anglia originally, Carolyn. Edward, the father, had the bad manners to die a mere fortnight before the census, but I think he was a Londoner, so it would be a challengingly long way back.

It's Harriet I'm interested, because her daughter Harriet Nash, by her first husband, Samuel Nash, married a Pridden. If Henry had been in civil registration, I could have found her maiden name. TNA doesn't have Ancestry marriages, but I couldn't find her first marriage last time I looked and at least one child was non-conformist.

So where was Harriet Nash born and when?

Harriet dies in June 1851. I think from memory that she said Cripplegate. Her sister Jane Nash was baptised at Haberdashers Hall Independent something or other. I haven't found her father Samuel Nash's death or her parents marriage but her mother Harriet did marry Edward Stagg in the 1820s. TNA doesn't have Ancestry marriages, so I couldn't check details.
At burial, Harriet's age is given as 34, so born 1816 or 1817ish.
