I am starting a tree for a friend.

Her family were Treadwells from Marylebone/Paddington and I was wondering if sks could see if the following marriage is on the parish images on Ancestry:

William Treadwell and Mary (probably Anderson - she was Scottish)
Mar qr 1877 Kensington

Many thanks!

Mary Anderson, spinster aged 24 years no occupation of 13 Sussex Square. Father John Anderson, shoemaker.

Re William's occ I thought it said Furrier at first but changed my mind!

Sue, thanks so much. That ties in with who I had for his parents from the census. His mother was Elizabeth (nee Ascott) from Halberton Devon.

He was a farrier on the censuses, so great!

I only started this last night. We had dinner with our friends and when we had coffee here she said she would like to do her father's tree and she knew her grandfather's name and when and where he was born (approximately). I sent her home with some print-outs but thought I could carry on this morning. :)

Kushka, I see this thread is very old and I didn't even remember it!
I didn't do much more research on this, so I'm afraid I have no more details.

FindMyPast have good records for Devon, so if you have a specific query perhaps we can help.

I have managed to get back a fair way with the Devonian side of the family. I am having problems with the Lawrence side and the Anderson side. Any help would be fabulous. Many thanks. Kushka.

Hi KushkaMoon

You need to give us specific details of what you are looking for/stuck with, so that we can try and help you :)

I am stuck on my paternal line. Its a Scottish line. I have got to here so far, but cannot get back any farther.
Mary Nicoll Anderson was born on 12 December 1852 in Forfar, Angus, her father, John, was 37, and her mother, Ann, was 32. She married William Treadwell on 10 February 1877. They had seven children in 14 years. She died in October 1908 at the age of 55.
I am looking for both her mothers and fathers parents.
Many thanks ????

On the 1861 census there is an Anderson family in Forfar: John age 46, a linen handloom weaver, born Rescobie, Ann age 40 born Forfar, and children Jean 20, William 18, George 11, Mary 9, Catharine 5, and Thomas 1 (according to ancestry's transcription). Is that the right family?

kiterunner
19-11-19, 14:08
Mary's married name is Lawrence.

Isn't it Treadwell?

KushkaMoon
19-11-19, 14:10
John Anderson was born around 1815 and Anne Erskine around 1820. That is as far as I have got. All of Mary Anderson siblings have Scottish surnames as middle names. I believe its a tradition.

kiterunner
19-11-19, 14:10
Reading back through the thread, I see that John Anderson was a shoemaker according to Mary's marriage record, so perhaps that 1861 census record isn't the right one?

KushkaMoon
19-11-19, 14:13
Yes you are right it is treadwell. Lawrence is another branch of my family. Yes this is the correct family also in the census.

I have seen this, but I am wondering if he changed jobs.

1881 census Mary is 29 born Scotland:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/7572/LNDRG11_10_15-0016?pid=13051917&treeid=&personid=&rc=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=Ctf16431&_phstart=successSource

and 1891 she is 39 born Scotland:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/6598/LNDRG12_95_97-0586?pid=8643814&treeid=&personid=&rc=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=Ctf16432&_phstart=successSource

and 1901 she is 49 born Scotland:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/7814/LNDRG13_112_114-0709?pid=118642&treeid=&personid=&rc=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=Ctf16433&_phstart=successSource#?imageId=LNDRG13_112_114-0708

On the GRO death index she is Mary Treadwell age 56 (Oct-Dec 1908 Marylebone).

So no middle name of Nicoll on any of these records, nor on the marriage record, and the censuses don't narrow her birthplace down to Forfar. Can I ask how you know she is Mary Nicoll Anderson from Forfar, so we don't cover the same ground all over again, please?

I have this record. I am hoping to get to Mary's grandparents, if possible. With many thanks. ??

From this Name: Mary Nicoll Anderson
Gender: Female

Birth Place: Forfar,Angus,Scotland
Father: John Anderson
Mother: Ann Erskine
FHL Film Number: 0993432-0993433

KushkaMoon

She also called her Daughter Annie Erskine treadwell in keeping with tradition.

KushkaMoon
19-11-19, 14:33
The naming tradition went as follows

First son after his paternal grandfather
Second son after his maternal grandfather
Third son after his father
Subsequent sons after other relatives, friends, neighbours, minister, doctor, schoolmaster, landowner etc

First daughter after her maternal grandmother
Second daughter after her paternal grandmother
Third daughter after her mother
Subsequent daughters after other relatives, friends, neighbours, wives of minister, doctor, schoolmaster, landowner etc
Thank you for fabulous help. It has so far confirmed what I have. Those Scottish records?? can be confusing. ??

kiterunner

Right, so she was born in 1851 not 1852, got it on Scotland's People now, and the other children in that 1861 census entry do also have parents John Anderson and Ann Erskine on FamilySearch, confirming that that is the right family for Mary Nicoll Anderson.

John Anderson married Ann Erskine 27 Dec 1840 at Forfar - have you viewed the image of this marriage record on Scotland's People (or some other way) to see if it gives any information about their parents?

kiterunner
19-11-19, 14:43
FamilySearch has John Anderson born 10 Mar 1815 and christened 10 Mar 1815 at Rescobie, Angus, parents James Anderson and Elizabeth Dick. I'm sure I saw the name Elizabeth Dick Treadwell earlier on - hang on - yes, born 1881 Kensington district with MMN Anderson. So that must be the right John Anderson birth record.

kiterunner
19-11-19, 14:45
And Ann Erskine born 27 Sep 1820 Forfar, parents Andrew Erskine and Catherine Watt (also from FamilySearch). One of Mary's sisters was named Catharine Watt Anderson, so this must be the right birth record for Ann.

KushkaMoon
19-11-19, 14:52
This is correct. I hope that some progress can be made even one more step backward. That would be fantastic ??

kiterunner
19-11-19, 15:27
FamilySearch shows that James Anderson married Elizabeth Dick 31 Jan 1811 at Rescorbie (or Rescobie), Angus. There are two records for this on Scotland's People and if you view the images there may (or may not) be information about their families. I don't see a marriage for Andrew and Catherine on either site.

kiterunner
19-11-19, 15:31
Also, if you view the images of the baptisms of children of both couples on Scotland's People, there could be information such as father's occupation, places of residence, godparents etc which might help in tracing them back.

Where can I find Scotland people???? And thank you ever so much.

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

It is a pay site although searching is free (but you have to register an account even to do that.)

KushkaMoon

Thank you for your help. I registered with the site. It says on the record, "James Anderson at Forrester Seat of this parish and Elizabeth Dick..." would you happen to know what this "of Forrester Seat" means? Thank you again.

Olde Crone
19-11-19, 21:26
Foresterseat is the name of an area just outside Forfar.
