Presumably you haven't got his marriage certificate yet to check his father's name?

I don't know if eventually knowing more about 'uncle' Denis would help? I found him in 1841 and it would seem his wife (if she is his wife) was called Ann(e):

This would be Denis's marriage, but everything hangs on whether that Joseph Stroud is yours in 1851! I've not looked at the later census records for him to see what he gave as his birthplace then.

These are the children of a John and Elizabeth Stroud. Anna Maria may well be the wife of Denis Woodard:

1. JOHN STROUD
Gender: Male Christening: 25 DEC 1821 Compton Beauchamp, Berkshire, England

2. SARAH STROUD
Gender: Female Christening: 23 MAR 1817 Compton Beauchamp, Berkshire, England

3. WILLIAM STROUD
Gender: Male Christening: 01 AUG 1819 Compton Beauchamp, Berkshire, England

4. ANNA MARIA STROUD
Gender: Female Christening: 10 SEP 1815 Compton Beauchamp, Berkshire, England

5. JOSEPH STROUD
Gender: Male Christening: 27 JUN 1813 Compton Beauchamp, Berkshire, England

In which case William would be the father of your Joseph.

This looks like William (still unmarried) with his sister Sarah and father John in 1841:

HO107; Piece 27; Book: 7; Civil Parish: Compton Beauchamp; County: Berkshire; Enumeration District: 5; Folio: 5; Page: 5; Line: 22

Possible marriage for Wiliam:

Marriages Dec 1841
STRATFORD Martha Faringdon 6 311
STROUD William Faringdon 6 311

and possible birth for Joseph:

Births Mar 1842
Stroud Joseph Faringdon 6 196

I've just looked at the later census records and I see for the first three he's said idstone or Ashbury and Idstone is in the parish of Ashbury so that's all looking fairly hopeful!

Thgere's a William and Martha Stroud in Reading in 1851 and I wondered if they were your couple. I don't think they are though, as apart from William not being born in the right area, their 'first' child is William T Stroud b Reading. From the birth reg his middle name is Titcombe and there's a marriage for a Wm Stroud to a Martha Titcombe in Marylebone in October 1846, so very likely a different couple.

I can't as yet find your Wm and Martha anywhere, but if they moved from the Faringdon Reg District then either or both might have died/remarried etc. I've not looked at the NBI to see if this area is covered at all.
