Good morning...I have
William Edward Oakes b 1896 Garston ,Liverpool....he married
Margaret Drake b 1895 Northleach,Gloucester.they married 1917 Kings Norton
I know of the following children
Raymond 1921
Robert 1922 ......usa
Cyril 1926......usa
Elizabeth 1929.....usa
???ula 1931....usa
S***** 1941....usa
THERE ARE 2 births for Oakes Drake on freebmd in Nottingham...V*****and E***** between 1917 and 1921...ARE THESE SIBLINGS...I am passing on info from an American cousin who is the son of Cyril b 1926...I am pretty sure the children after Raymond were born in Syracuse, New York , but not 100% sure.

so How do I find marriages for the American born Oakes children and How do I find out when(certain it`s between 1921 and 1922) when William Edward / Margaret / Raymond emigrated...also...if I can find the Passenger list DOES IT ALSO HAVE V***** AND E***** ON BOARD with them....this may add 2 more family members...and what is the full name of ???ula b 1931....a lot to ask I know ,but I have never researched American family before....cheers...allan:)

Allan, are any of those children still living? If so then we need to remove their names from your post.

Thanks, Allan.

Marriages for the American-born children - they may be on ancestry but it just depends which state they married in (if they married) - some states have their indexes online up to quite recently but many don't.

Thanks Kiterunner....I am trying to find out firstly whether the 2 other Oakes / Drake births in Nottingham V***** in 1919 and E***** b 1920 are with William /Margaret / and Raymond when they sailed to America...then I will try to find any marriages....the marriages are secondary , as I presume they will be difficult to find...as for the 2 other children V & E it would be a nice surprise for my cousin as these would be an Aunt and Uncle he never knew he had....thanks for your help, it is appreciated...allan:)

This is an Update
I have found the family on the 1930 census and V & E are NOT with William and Margaret...so they are not family....but , also Elizabeth supposedly b 1929 is not with them either, so I can only presume Elizabeth died in her 1st year or wasn`t born until 1930....allan:)

Allan not being on the census doesn't mean they aren't related. They may have been with friends/family on the night.

Looking at the free passenger list search on findmypast, Margaret Oakes age 27 and Raymond Oakes age 1 sailed from Southampton to New York in 1922. William E Oakes age 25 also sailed from Southampton to New York in 1922 but it looks as if he went on a different ship; most likely he went first to sort out a job and home before they went to join him. It doesn't look as though any other Oakeses went with them.

Update - have found them on the passenger lists on ancestry arriving at New York, Margaret Florence Oakes age 27, next of kin in England father Mr T Drake and "Richmond William" Oakes age 1, both last resident in Birmingham, sailed on the S.S Homeric, September 1922. William E Oakes sailed on the Mauretania in March 1922 with brother in law Albert V Drake, and sisters in law Ethel E Drake and Gladys R Drake.

Thank you all....that`s confirmed that William and Margaret only had Raymond in England , and the other children were born USA....I am quite happy with the other info except ???ula Oakes b 1931....that`s a little frustrating..
thanks Margaret but I won`t need the images now, it was the V & E OAKES I was concerned about.I thought I was missing 2 Oakes children in my tree.....cheers...allan:)

Looking at the image for the 1930 census on ancestry, yes, Elizabeth is there - Elizabeth P Oakes daughter 1 yr 0 months, born New York.

Allan, the 1940 census is now on Ancestry, and the child's name was indeed Ula, which I've never heard before.

William and Margaret (surname shown as Oaks) were living in Cicero, Onondaga, New York with children Raymond, Robert, Cyril, Elizabeth and Ula. Raymond born in England, other children in New York.

I am pretty sure the children after Raymond were born in Syracuse, New York , but not 100% sure.

Yes, Cicero is a suburb of Syracuse. "And Liverpool is right there too," chimes in my OH. :D Onondaga is the county, and Syracuse is its county seat. Liverpool is a little closer to Syracuse than Cicero.

Welcome, R Hall! I'm sure Allan will be delighted to hear from you.

P.S. Ula is not an unfamiliar name to me. Sometimes spelled Eula.
