I need to check something I did years ago, before I had access to any census!

James Holden born 1813 Darwen Lancs,

in 1861 he should be a paper dealer married to Alice (age unknown) and living in Manchester. There are probably no children.

Thankyou in advance.

Hmm, there are a few James Holdens born Darwen or Over Darwen around the right time, but none with an Alice and none living in Manchester (on ancestry).

Ah, thankyou Kate!

You are right, there are quite a few, lol! This one has a brother in law called James Holden, same age, also a paper dealer......but bro in law had children still at home in 1861.

Thankyou again.

They married in 1833. They were cousins - she was Alice Holden.

James Holden had a sister, Rachel Holden, who married James Green Holden, a paper dealer, who was also a cousin but not immediately related to Alice Holden.

Neither couple had any children, but James Green Holden left a suspiciously large sum of money to two young women, whose mother is parading as Mrs Holden, widow, on a census. These two young women were not registered as Holden though.

I have a contact who is convinced she is descended from James and Alice, but has no certs (neither do I).

Oh, paddy paddy paddy! Scuse me while I throw myself round the forum!

My contact showed me her research. Fortunately, the children of her James and Alice had a couple of unusual names and I was quickly able to identify the mother's maiden name - thankyou Lancsbmd - and thence the marriage, which took place in a far more suitable area than MY James and Alice.

She's just messaged back saying "But the marriage record definitely says James Holden to Alice Holden" - YES, but it's the wrong marriage for your couple!!!!! Your James Holden didn't marry Alice Holden! Your James was always a farmer, mine never was a farmer. Your James is living at one address in 1861, mine is living at another!

*Deep breaths. Be nice. Be nice.*

You're just too picky by far.
