I'm hoping at least some of the children might still be with their dad, James Mills, shoemaker (widowed 1824).

Children baptised in Stoke Newington, Middlesex:
Mary Mills bap 1813
Elizabeth Mills bap 1816
Jane Mills bap 1818 (probably married 1839 at St Pancras when it looks like her dad was still alive - the groom's father is noted as dec'd but James isn't)
Nathaniel Mills bap 1820
Henry Mills bap 1822 (I have him 1851 on - he was a baker and married at Finsbury)
Charles Mills bap 1824

I can't find any trace of them in 1841 - my only hope is they're mistranscribed in some way I haven't thought of!

Hi Lindsay,

Probably no use at all, but there is a Nathaniel Miles, a Male Servant, age shown as 25 yrs, born Middlesex, in the household of an L. Dikke/Hikke?, Chapel St, Westminster (St George's, Hanover Sq Parish).

Class: HO107; Piece 734; Book: 6; Civil Parish: St George Hanover Square; County: Middlesex; Enumeration District: 12; Folio: 29; Page: 20 Refers.

Given that they used to round ages off, and that the name may have been mistranscribed, he may be a possibility, but apologies if I have only muddied the waters even further for you!

Thanks for looking, Finbar, I'll have a look at that.

Don't you just hate it when whole families just seem to vanish off the face of the earth?

You might find the bit of the census they were on in 1841 is missing. I have some of my husband's lot missing in 1841 and 1861, when if I could only find them I could solve at least two puzzles!

Yes, that's possible, Nell, James's son Henry later lived in part of Islington that's missing from 1861.

The 1841 census is really my last hope of finding out anything at all about James - mind you, with a name like Mills it was always going to be hard...
