It looks like "mareen store gatherer" [marine?]. But I've no idea what that could be.
Mareen [sic] Store Gatherer????
Here is someone else with one in their tree http://newsarch.rootsweb.com/th/read/DEVON/1999-07/0931907515 - perhaps a ship's chandler?
Could he be collecting rubbish which could be sold to a marine store?

A Gatherer is something to do with glasswork.

A Marine Store was an odds and sods type place that sold anything and everything. Think of the Two Ronnies "Four Candles" sketch and you're close

I thought it looked more like stove than store.

No, I think it does say store - the r is the same as the other r's on the page. No idea what a Marine Store Gatherer did though, sorry!

Many thanks everyone :)
We thought it could possibly be 'stone gatherer' but agree that it looks more like 'store', it was the first word that we were unsure of!
Could the 'marine' be anything to do with the Fens?
Zoe - that sounds reasonable - (it also made us laugh comparing it to the Two Ronnies :D)

A "marine stone gatherer" might be someone who went round picking up suitable rocks for use as ships' ballast.
