I've just found George Harvey born 1863/4 in 1881 in Stafford Jail.

Looking at the criminal records on Ancestry it looks like he was a habitual criminal and was finally sent for penal servitude.

1881 - 15 months for Burglary and a former conviction of felony
1882 - Larceny (says 5 years penal servitude)
1883 - Larceny - 6 months
1885 - Housebreaking - 12 months
1887 - Unlawfully wounding - penal servitude.

How do I:
1. find out if these are all the same person?
2. if they are the same person, how come he didn't get sent to the colonies after the first sentence?
3. Where can I check where he was sent to and on what ship?

Transportation had stopped by the 1860s. It doesn't say anything about transportation. Penal servitude just means imprisonment with hard labour I think.

Oooh I never thought of that OC

Of course it was too late in the day for transportation.

I wonder what happened to him then.

He was in Stafford Jail in 1881 but I can't find him after that. Mind you, I haven't checked for a death.

Ancestry's records are only useful for pinpointing dates, unless it's a rare name. The actual prison records - CROs or TNA - will give a few more useful details. Sometimes PHOTOGRAPHS!

I had one of my Calladines sent to Portland jail and in the newspaper for his next offence it said he was a returned transport, not sure if that helps you.
