I can't find OH's G Grandfather Henry Gibbs (b 1846 in Tiverton, Devon) on the 1871 census. His wife, Ann, is living with her parents in Tiverton.
He was in the Royal Marines from 1864 to 1882, when he was 'discharged as an invalid'.
He joined in Plymouth and was transferred to Portsmouth in 1876. I found this info on the National Archives site and am waiting for them to get back to me with a quote for copying the documents.
His two oldest children were born in Gosport in 1879 & 1881 and in the 1881 census he was living at 7 Union Place, Forton Road, Alverstoke, Hampshire with his wife and daughters.
Now for the dumb question :(............
If he was at sea when the 1871 census was taken, would he be listed anywhere?
