View Full Version : Would someone please look for a marriage on Ancestry's London records?

I'm writing an article about OH's Newton's slight connection with the Barnardo family.

Could someone please see if the following marriages are on Ancestry:

Bernard C E Bernardo/Barnardo or Bernard Michaelis Bernardo
to
Harriet Ann Newton
St John Hampstead
19 March 1885

and

John Michaelis Barnardo
to
Abigail Amelia O'Brien (or possibly Drinkwater)
23 Jun 1837 German Church? London

I'm trying to get my facts straight as far as possible.

The first one to Harriet is on there, but I can't see the 1837 marriage.

Thanks, Merry. Have I got the details correct? Does it give Bernard's father?

Oops, I went out! lol

March 19th 1885 at the parish church in the parish of Hampstead

Bernard Charles Ernest Bernardo, full age, bachelor, merchant, residence Hampstead, father John Michael Barnardo (note different spelling of surname!) deceased.

Harriet Anne Newton, full age, spinster, residence Norwood, Surrey, father James Newton deceased.

Married by licence by Maxwell G Tracy

Witnesses, I'm not certain - Thomas Adams(on)? and Mary Dallimore ?

Thanks, Merry, that's what I needed to know. :)

Charles' father was John Michaelis Barnardo, and his mother was Elizabeth (née O'Brien). When she died John married her sister Abigail Amalia - allegedly in the German church in London. John and Abigail were parents of Dr Thomas Barnardo so Thomas and Charles were half-brothers.

Abigail Amelia O'Brien (or possibly Drinkwater)

Did she potentially marry as Drinkwater because she was 'illegally' marrying her dead sister's husband? Wasn't Drinkwater her mmn?

Ah, got it now, having read this:

http://www.goldonian.org/barkingside/subpage/barnardo.htm

I thought they must have their facts right as they mention the German church wedding as taking place 23rd June 1837 and witnessed by Jos Tabrum, Fanny and James Connell and Mary and Ellen Bryan. But then they say 'After the marriage, which was followed by a civil ceremony on 14 July....'

So, why isn't the civil ceremony showing in the GRO indexes?

Because the index didn't start till September?

Yes, Merry - Drinkwater was Elizabeth and Abigail's mother's maiden name.

It's amazing how many Irish records are beginning to show up - it's quite random. Some baptisms show, others don't.

Abigail Amelia Barnardo (obviously named after her aunt) married William Fullwood. They had a daughter called Sophie who married Edward Buckley Newton, brother of Harriet who married Bernard.

The GRO index started when civil marriages started, July 1837, Mary.

Oops, wrong again :)

I was forgetting the September quarter started in July...

I wonder if the marriage turns up on Pallots?

No, I've tried Pallot's, BIVRI, LMA and FamilySearch Record Search, but drawn a blank.

John M's first marriage is here, in case you don't have it, but there are very few details:

Not in the London Non-conformist registers either.

These people do look-ups at the London German churches (not free, though):

Thanks, Mary, I have used this site with some success for this article and for other research.

I'm going to have to finish writing it quickly as we are heading off on our hols soon!
