Hello, after a long break I am back - researching my son in law's family, and I am having great trouble finding both the birth and death records for the following man:

Thomas Barrett
born 1869 Rettendon Essex (parents John b. 1843 and Susan b. 1845)

1871 he was in runwell Essex (RG10, 1660, Folio 13, page 17)

1881 still in runwell (RG11, 1760, Folio 11, page 15)

1893 married Sarah Ann Haynes in Upminster

1896 - 1901 was in Gread Baddow Essex, working as a Brickmaker. (RG13, 1675, Folio 19 page 9).

I cannot find him as yet in 1911.

The trouble is, I cannot find where to search the pages of records - only the results that Ancestry come up with. Have they done away with that option?

If you want to browse through the index pages, it's the "Browse this Collection" option on the right hand side of the screen when you go on the search page for whichever you want out of births, marriages or deaths.

But his birth's on FreeBMD anyway - Thomas Joseph Barrett Dec 1868 Chelmsford 4a 182.

Ooh, and taking advantage of the fact that the free 1911 census search on Genes Reunited displays birthplace, I can see that he is unexpectedly in Pontypridd, Glamorganshire.

Household in 1911 in Pontypridd:
Thomas Joseph Barrett 42 Runwell Essex
Sarah Barrett 42 Toseland Huntingdonshire
Albert Barrett 29 Runwell Essex
Sidney Barrett 22 Runwell Essex
Thomas Sidney Barrett 16 Upminster Essex

There's a death in Pontypridd in 1938, but that person is too young. I wonder if this is him?

Deaths Dec 1936
Barrett Thomas J 68 Bridgend 11a 760

Thank you Kite and Merry...... Glamorganshire does actually fit because many of the family moved over there (and morphed into Jenkins and Jones...;(;(). 1911 is a massive bonus as well - a million thanks for that.

That information is a huge help, and also the bit about being able to search the indexes still. I needed a bit of a boost because the GRO have just refunded me for a cert that I sent for for an Evan Jenkins.........it seemed an exact match, but they say that they have no trace of him at the references given.

Oh well, back to the drawing board then.

Thank you again

Ooh, and taking advantage of the fact that the free 1911 census search on Genes Reunited displays birthplace.......

Now that's an interesting factoid. I shall use GR next time I'm looking for someone in 1911.

Have you got the details of the Evan Jenkins cert from your order, Sally? Maybe one of us can spot what went wrong.
