My daughter is getting into photography and has been taking architectural photos.
She took this at St James' church, Barton under Needwood this morning and wants to know what it says.

Cam't read it, but it looks much younger than the carving - say early c20th.

The last two letters on the right look like ER.

If pushed, I'd say the last word is Leader, but it's a very odd font - you wouldn't usually see that sort of d around.

Margaret, we were there just over a week ago! OH's sister lives in Barton-under-Needwood and my m-i-l used to live there too!

I can't make out what it says, however. :(

I have skimmed through but I haven't found any reference yet - am cooking dinner!

Desaturated, enlarged, sharpened and I've taken down the brightness ......
Not sure it helps

Hi Elizabeth

What a small world, it's only about 5 miles from me.

How about asking the vicar?

Brilliant idea UJ, when you can get hold of him. He retires at the end of August. He has a triple parish, one of which is the church that my father in law was buried at in March and the same one that my daughter gets married at in September.

Lovely man although I don't know if he will know but it's worth a try.

Even if he doesn't know, there's bound to be some know-all (Oops, I mean knowledgeable person, like us!) in the parish who he can ask!

Last year we visited an old school friend of OH's who lives just up the road on the opposite side! First time they had met in 45 years!!

I could ask my sister-in-law but I doubt she would know - she doesn't go to the church.

Which side of the church is it on, Margaret?

When we were there the village had a sort of open day on - the whole place was buzzing.

I hope you will ask him and I hope he replies :)

The second word looks like EidER to me - I did wonder if the d stood for eth - ð, but can't make any sense of the first word, nor whether that first stroke on the second is a letter or not.

I thought it might be Elder but not sure what goes before it. Not even sure if it is just two words or if there are more words and those funny squiggles separate them.

I think the section before 'eider' (or whatever that bit is) says "TRUTH BE".

I don't know Elizabeth, she was on her own I didn't go with her but I can ask. I would imagine you are refering to Barton Gala, I remember going years ago.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I think she should ask the vicar too.

I think that it is probably partial - I wonder if DER is part of Derby - apparently: On the South side of the tower -`IT. 1517. Archidiac Derby and Bucking;' used to be inscribed. John Taylor's Coat of Arms are evident in several places, but these and the Royal Coat of Arms above the East Window are badly eroded. The external stone-work was restored between 1986 and 1992.

John Taylor is the name of the school in Barton under Needwood, named after whoever John Taylor was obviously.

I wonder what it means though?

There's lots about John Taylor on the internet, Marg, for instance:

I'm now thinking that a modern stonemason has tried to restore it and not understood latin and has made a right pigs ear of it as happened with the Abbey Gateway in Burton on Trent, perhaps the same stonemason.

It's supposed to say Anno Domini 1593
