Clementina Fenton was born 1 Dec 1838 in Bicester, Oxfordshire. Daughte rof Henry John and Eliza.

No sign on 1841 or 1851.

In 1861 there is a Clementina born c1839 "Beicester" as the wife of John Ballard (born Wells, Norfolk).
They have a son called Arthur c1859
Living in St Mary Nottingham

in 1871 all still together: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=uki1871%2c&rank=0&gsfn=clementina&gsln=&sx=&=%2c%2c1%2c+%2c%2c%2c1%2c+&gs1co=3251%2cEngland&gs1pl=5280%2cOxfordshire&year=&yearend=&sbo=0&sbor=&srchb=r&prox=1&ti=5538&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=35&fh=0&h=4902619&recoff=1

by 1881 she is calling herself Clementina Hopkins (down as married)
John Ballard is in the same household but down as a boarder and a widower.
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=uki1881%2c&rank=0&gsfn=clementina&gsln=&sx=&=%2c%2c1%2c+%2c%2c%2c1%2c+&gs1co=3251%2cEngland&gs1pl=5280%2cOxfordshire&year=&yearend=&sbo=0&sbor=&srchb=r&prox=1&ti=5538&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=35&fh=12&h=17713908&recoff=1

I can't spot her in 1891

In 1901
Richard J Ballard, widower, born Wells Norfolk is the head of the household and Clementina Hopkins, widow, is now his servant

Now I'm pretty certain, despite not finding a marriage, that this is my Clementina as the son, Arthur Ballard, calls one of his children Clement Fenton Ballard (born 1884).

Anyone got any ideas what's going on? And can anyone find out what they're calling themselves in 1891?

Yours in confusion

AHA

Found them in 1891 where she's transcribed as Cemenlina Hopkins

She is "head" and married
He is boarder and widower

Marriage on FreeBMD:

Marriages Jun 1862
Fenton Clementina Medway 2a 483
Frazin Samuel Medway 2a 483
Hopkins Frederick Gramshaw Medway 2a 483

(Presumably Samuel Frazin's bride is missing)
So it looks likely that Clementina married Frederick Hopkins and then lived with Richard John Ballard while she was still married, don't you think? The marriage might be on that Medway Ark site which I've never used but heard of...

Oops, just realised she was with Ballard before she got married! Well, she must have run off with Mr Hopkins and then gone back to Mr Ballard.

Ooooh - thank you. I looked at that earlier but before I worked out the Hopkins bit.

Blimey there are all these entries for FG Hopkins:

Marriages Jun 1862
Hopkins Frederick Gramshaw Medway 2a 483

Marriages Dec 1870
Hopkins Frederick Gramshaw Kensington 1a 304

Marriages Sep 1883
HOPKINS Frederick Gramshaw Pancras 1b 4

Marriages Jun 1906
HOPKINS Frederick Gramshaw Portsmouth 2b 1191

All marriages and no deaths! (there was also one birth after all the marriages) I wonder how many of them are the same man?

Medway Ark has the marriage and it's definitely her.

What a brilliant site.

He was a busy bunny. Wonder if it's a Brides in the Bath case and my Clementina made a lucky escape

Okay - marriage gives his age as 22 and his father as William Henry Augustus Hopkins, Arny Clothier.

So this: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=View&r=5538&dbid=1558&iid=31280_195167-00040&fn=Frederick+Grimshaw&ln=Hopkins&st=d&ssrc=&pid=2446640 must be his baptism.

Birthplace Bloomsbury.

Now to find out what he did with his wives

From which it's only a short step to Semolina!
