Afternoon all

Can anyone spot a George Frederick Wells b1859 at Downham Market in the census please?

I have his marriage cert from 1880 at Stockport, father is called Edward, his wife is Elizabeth Rebecca Elmer b 1853 North Elmham, Norfolk.
The only other details known are that he was in Lincoln 1901 to the 1930's and died in Scarborough (although buried in Lincoln) in 1937.

His mother may be Susan but i can't say for certain, if anyone can find him in the later census returns too that would be appreciated.

Thanks

I've found him in 1871. He's at The Royal Asylum Of St Anne Society, Streatham Hill Surrey S W, Streatham.

Seems to be a school.

Thanks

Wonder what he was doing down there? I'm assuming his father had died a year or two before as i suspect his mother had remarried in 1868, i'll never be certain unless he pops up in the '61 though. He is a bit too far off centre to send for the b/c without something to hint at his folks beforehand.

Just throwing it a slightly different way, is there a Susan Wells c1826 Wells next the Sea with a hubby called Edward in the '61?

Rather different places of birth, but son Edward 9 is with Mr and Mrs Elmer on the next census. Occ is off though.

EDIT: It's right though - see post #10

Send me your email address Glen

I've found him in 1881 in Stockport with a family called Elmer

Can't find him in 1861, are you sure he didn't make his fathers name up for the marriage cert? Do you have his birth cert?

I'm assuming you have the 1901 as you knew where they were.

Struggling with 1891

You could compare his birth cert to the marriage cert for Susan Wells to Mr Elmer and see if his mmn matches her father's surname.

Found them in 1891, still in Stockport. He can't make up his mind if he's George Frederick or Frederick George.

The marriage between Edward Wells and Susan Mitchell took place at Stepney Baptist Chapel in Kings Lynn on 18 Apr 1851. Unfortunately the FreeREG entry doesn't include the witness or fathers names or any occupations.

Susan is with her father and brother and others in 1851

Oooh, I see I beat the Rootschat community by 20 minutes for the 1861 census entry, but they haven't proved it's the right people yet!! lol

By the way, haven't a clue where they were in 1911, any ideas? I can't find them.

Sorry folks, i'm having to use library pooters nowadays and here in the rural parts the library shuts early!!!

Been a few changes since i last spoke with most of you, major one being i have had all my FH stuff deleted from my pooter and it's been kidnapped by my now ex other half. Slowly i'm rebuilding everything onto memory sticks from my TP site.

Thanks for looking up the info, i found the marriage on Family Search record pilot about five minutes before Merry yesterday but didn't have tim to add it here. As for the 1911 census, George F Wells and wife Elizabeth haven't appeared from the woodwork but Elizabeth died in late 1911, address given as 40 Colegrave Street, Lincoln. They appear in the street in slightly earlier directories and it would seem they bought/inherited the Elmer Wardrobe Depot shop in 1901 from one George Elmer, hubby of a certain Susan Wells nee Mitchell.

I was hoping to prove that George F and Elizabeth were step sibs and it looks like i was right.

PM on the way Margaret if you still have the images available i would appreciate them.

I'll check that address out in 1911 Glen.

Answered your PM before I read your last post.

Would you believe it, No. 40 Colegrave Street is missing. It goes from 1 - 23 and the 2 - 46 and no 40.

I'll have another try.

I really can't see them in 1911, I wonder with number 40 being missing they didn't fill in their census form.

Mmm

I wonder if the illness the wife had was a factor (though she died in September). Not to panic anyway, the directories, burial register and death cert put them in the same place so it's pretty certain they were there despite the missing census return.

1913 Directory shows #40 is also known as Southdale and it's a different surname listed.

Received the images btw, thanks again.
