This is not my own tree so I"m trying to see if I can work out the ansswer without having to buy a certificate:

I have an Eliza Wales who married William Keightley in 1869 in St George Hanover Square.

According to census she was born c1844 in Terrington St Clement, Norfolk

1871 - http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1871&h=7499540&ti=5538&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t16743094_p414365451_g32768

1881 - http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&h=13852949&ti=5538&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t16743094_p414365451_g32768

1891 - http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1891&h=12732353&ti=5538&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t16743094_p414365451_g32768

and I think this is her before her marriage in 1861 - http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1861&h=16643387&ti=5538&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t16743094_p414365451_g32768

Family Search pilot has a few baptisms for Eliza/Elizabeth Wales around the right time in Terrington St Clement. Two sets of parents for all of them William and Sarah, and James and Hannah.

I can find William/Sarah fine on 1841 and 1851 but there's absolutely no sign whatsoever of James/Hannah for me to work out if their Eliza lived.

Can anyone spot them at all in 1841/1851 census, please?

Thank you

Zoe

Not found them yet but their marriage is on FreeREG 21 Aug 1837 Terrington St Clement, James Wales and Hannah Reader, both single, and then there is a burial for James Wales 17 Dec 1847 age 36, also at Terrington St Clement.

Found them in 1841 transcribed as Walles - James 25 Ag Lab yes and Hannah 20 yes.

Aaaaah. That may explain it. I did have a look for Eliza's with mother Hannah to see if there was anything that looked like a remarriage but nothing jumped out.

I'll have a play around with it a bit more.

Cheers, Kate

Then there is a marriage for Hannah Wales on FreeBMD Wisbech district (which included Terrington St Clement) Dec 1849 to either John Barham, Robert Burrows, George Hines or Charles Toyne. Other brides: Julia Barber, Sarah Meanes, Mary Pickworth.

George Hines appears to have married Sarah.

And it appears one of the Eliza's died in 1850 so would explain non-appearance on 1851 census

Think I have Hannah married to Robert Burrows in 1861:

but there is a mystery granddaughter called Anna Kirk aged 1.

Well that's blown in. Robert Burrows is on 1851 census without Hannah but with his "daughter" Elizabeth Wales, who I had hoped was dead, and a visitor called Elizabeth Reader

Possible marriage between Elizabeth Wales and John Kirk Jun 1859 Wisbech.

But isn't Elizabeth Eliza's older sister? If Eliza isn't there then she might well be dead.

OKay - full circle now - Elizabeth Wales married John Kirk in 1859, explaining who the grandaughter in 1861 is - and answering the question on whether this Eliza/beth Wales is mine.

No. :)

Thanks for you help Kate, really was going round in circles with it before

Yes, you're right, Elizabeth and Eliza are sisters but I wasn't completely happy they had both died and therefore either of them could have been my Eliza Wales.

I suppose there is still the possibility that Eliza is out there somewhere too though. And the ELiza death I found could be either William's or James' daughter.

I am going to need the certificate to be absolutely certain aren't I?

Oh yes, Eliza Wales was buried Wisbech 13 Nov 1850, age 5y 5m, abode Timber Market.

Eliza daughter of James and Hannah was baptised in 1845, so that will be her, and Elizabeth was baptised in 1843 so will be the one that married John Kirk.

Sorry, we were posting at the same time. Eliza who died 1850 was buried in Wisbech St Peter so she must be James and Hannah's daughter, mustn't she? Of course to be absolutely sure you would need the cert, yes.

I think that's solved it as I have William/Sarah's Eliza with them in 1851 so that definitely answers the question of which Eliza survived.

With the annoyingly similarly named Elizabeth marrying John Kirk I think we're there.

*goes for lie down before attempting next mystery*
