Francis Ernest Chilcott married Emily Jane Hancock 2Q 1891.

In 1891 they have 2 children Ernest and Doris. RG13/2394/45/23.

On the 1911 Francis has died and the children have full names.

Ernest Leopold Foster Chilcott and Doris May Foster Chilcott.

On checking FreeBMD Ernest was born Q1 1892.

Doris, however, is concerning me.

On FreeBMD Doris is registered Doris May Chilcott 1Q 1898 Faringdon Vol 2c Page 285

Ancestry though threw up another result.
Doris Foster-Chilcott 1Q 1898 Faringdon Vol 2c Page 285

Where did the Foster come from?

Edit: I have just found a registration for Ernest Foster-Chilcott too.

She's listed as both Chilcott and Foster-Chilcott on FreeBMD, Toni, and so is Ernest.

Sorry Kate. Was just editting my post when I saw yours.

The question is why would they be registered under both names?

I can only think the father is not the husband.

It could be that the father used both surnames.

Possibly Kate but he was married and died under Chilcott alone.

Do you know if dad was legitimate and what his parents surnames were?

Is this Francis's parents marriage a couple of years before he was born?

Marriages Sep 1866
CHILCOTT Francis E Bridgwater 5c 619 <<<<<<<<<<<<,
FOSTER Harriet Bridgwater 5c 619 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
PARSONS Henry G Bridgwater 5c 619
SYDENHAM Mary A Bridgwater 5c 619

If yes, he's not using both names because he was illegitimate as I had first guessed, but perhaps just getting ready to be trendy! (Double-barrelled was trendy in the Edwardian era!). Maybe he lost interest in the idea though?

Maybe Francis' mother died and he wanted to put her name in his children's names for some reason or he just wanted his mother's name to carry on.

Merry Francis is the inlaw, my relative is his wife. So I haven't checked him out properly.

I just panicked at the double barrell name. I though I had the wrong marriage for Laura, initially thinking the Foster was the wife's name. A quick search didn't reveal a marriage around the right time though.

Thanks for thinking sensibly for me.

Maggie you may be right about his mother however on a quick search I don't think it worked. The children seem to have dropped the Foster from their surname.
