On the 1871 census at Daphne Cottage, Brixton Hill, we have:
Robert Jas Bristow Head Widr 73 Oil Merchant & Cooper Employing 20 Men Surrey Walworth
Charles Do Son Unm 32 Cooper Manager Southwark St Johns
+ 2 servants

Charles got married in 1892 to a Jane Pursey at Portsea Island, Hampshire, and he was a widower on the 1881 and 1891 censuses. I'd spent a while looking for possible marriages between the 1871 and 1881 censuses but got nowhere. Jane was born about 1833 Basingstoke, Hampshire. (I found a likely baptism for her with parents John and Mary).

Now, I've found a marriage on the new FamilySearch Record Search pilot site:
Charles Bristow married Martha West 28 Feb 1870 Merstham, Surrey, both widowed, his father Robert James Bristow, hers William Peacey. Found a likely previous marriage for her - Martha Peacey to John West Jul-Sep 1851 Kensington.

The Charles Bristow / Martha West marriage is on the GRO indexes for Jan-Mar 1871, so I assume the year is wrong on the FamilySearch pilot site, but that still means they got married before the 1871 census, so where is Martha in 1871? I found a possible death - Martha Bristow age 42 at St Olave Jan-Mar 1876, which would more or less fit with this possible family I found in 1841 at Abingdon, Berkshire:

William Peacy 35 I Shoe M Y
William Do 5 Y
Mary Do 30 Shoe Binder N
Mary Do 12 N
George Do 13 Y
Martha Do 9 N
Elizabeth Do 4 Y

I can't find Martha or any of the Peacy family on any other census or anywhere else! Anyone have more luck than me, please?

(I don't need help finding Charles Bristow on any censuses or anything, it's just Martha I'm trying to sort out. And I'm hoping it's a mistake it says he's widowed on the marriage!).

And is it just a coincidence that her surname is so similar to Jane's?

Nibbling at the edges......

I'm just wondering if that 1841 is the right Martha? Only because there is this:

Deaths Jun 1841
Peacey Martha Abingdon 6 76

I have unsuccessfully been looking at the censuses but now I have to give up the laptop for a while........

Could this be Martha West in 1861, living Bermondsey, Surrey, born Abington [sic], Berks:

Martha West 27 , widowed [I think]
Julia West dau 9
John West son 6

If so, this would be her in 1871, London:
Martha West, Lodger, W, 37
Julia West, dau, un, 19
John West, son, 16
Martha West, dau, 14

Merry, that Robert James Bristow is Charles' brother, but I have all the info about the Bristows already except for Charles' marriage to Martha and any he had before her.

Sabrina, yes! That is absolutely her! Did you see who she's living next door to in 1861, lol?! But fancy her being a Charwoman! One of Charles's sisters had her marriage announced in The Gentleman's Magazine! I wonder if Charles had to marry Martha...?

lol, no I didn't notice the neighbour! Wonder where her daughter Martha was in 1861 though?

Yes, I was just wondering that. Well, got to go and watch Lewis now, thanks very much for your help, both of you.

Oooh, that's annoying!

Right at the start I saw this on Ancestry:

Martha Beachy abt 1832 Mingden, Berkshire, England Lodger Henley, Oxfordshire

but as I thought Martha wasn't born in Berks I didn't think far enough to imagine that Mingden should read Abingdon! lol Then I decided she was dead!!

Think this looks like daughter Martha's baptism in Bermondsey in 1858, born 1857, parents John and Martha West, occupation Cooper.

So, I wonder if Charles and Martha got married out in the sticks to avoid his family hearing about it?

I never thought of looking for Beachy! Yes, it's a shame the 1841 census entry is such a muddle. Or maybe she really wasn't born in Abingdon but grew up thinking she was.

I never thought of looking for Beachy!

I looked for ?eachy and ?eachey on Ancestry having had quite a few P, B and R reversal errors in the past. It's taken me an age to remember you don't sill have to have three characters at the start of words etc.
