Merry's post has prompted this, so I thought I'd post it separately.
I have a sampler (probably my grandmother's). I don't know anything about it and don't even remember it from her house. I don't know of any family connection to us, but who knows!
It was worked by :
SALLY VAN NORDEN AGED 7 1807
It is in English with a very English-looking house and appearance.
"Now blest the Maid whom circling years improve
Her GOD the object of her warmest love
Whose useful hours successive as they glid
The BOOK the NEEDLE and the PEN divid
Who sees her Parents Heart exult with joy
And the fond tear stands sparkling in their eye"
I just have never been able to find any Van Norden family in England.
Any thoughts?

Alan, I saw that and did wonder. Thanks for pointing it out again.
Perhaps the "Van" got dropped.

I have found this:
http://www.bazalgette.com/phpgedview/individual.php?pid=I10&ged=bazalgette.ged&tab=0
However, the date worries me. My sampler quite clearly says "Age 7 1807" so there is no leaway for 6 years!

Looks like a misreading of Illegitimate to me.

The word "van", meaning "of" or "from" suggests the name is of Dutch origin.
"van Noorden" is more likely to refer to a place called Noorden than the town of Naarden (otherwise the name would be "van Naarden"). There is a village called Noorden in the province of Zuid-Holland, and also a town called Norden in Niedersachsen (Lower-Saxony) in Northwest Germany.
This is a good site for looking up the origin of Dutch surnames: http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/nfb/index.php?taal=eng

Thanks, Garstonite and Cloggie. I had always assumed the name was of Dutch origin.
The interesting thing is that the little girl has embroidered "Van Norden" and not "Van Noorden" on the sampler, which is already an anglicisation (?). That is assuming that the name started out as Van Noorden.
I really don't know whether I shall get any further with it. We are contemplating having it valued as if it has no family link (which I don't think it has) it would be better off in the possession of someone ideally with links to the family or who would look after it better than I can (wrapped in bubble wrap in a drawer).
