Nothing to add to BK6 from this thread

I have a needlework sampler worked on a piece of sackcloth and framed behind glass. It was worked by someone called Susanna Neal of Burbage and is dated 1846.

If I could find anyone connected to Susanna I would be more than willing to give them the sampler as I don't think there is any connection to my family.

Having looked on the 1841 census there is a family in Burbage (Leic)

Thomas Neal 45 Ag lab No
Susannah Neal 45 Yes
Susannah Neal 10 Yes

I'm presuming Susannah jr is the needlewoman? There is a bap in the IGI for Sus, dau of Thos and Sus in 1834 in Burbage. It doesn't give a dob for the child, so can't be 100% certain if this bap is for the same people, but probably.

In 1851 Thomas and Susannah are both 61 but I can't clearly establish their birthplaces. Here's the page:

HO107; Piece: 2082; Folio: 102; Page: 21

Susannah jr is no longer at home in 1851. I can't find a marriage or death for her.

It's possible Susannah senr is Susannah Peck as there's a marriage in Burbage for Susannah Peck to Thomas Neal in 1817.

I can't see anyone researching this family on Ancestry and I can't access GR at all at the moment, so can't even look there.

Please could someone try and work out where the parents were born and see if anyone on GR is researching them?

Thanks muchly :)

How interesting, Merry. I can't help you in this, but I have a very similar situation.

When my Mum died I found in her loft two samplers, which probably came from my grandmother.

There is one with no family connection at all, as far as I am aware. It's beginning to get holes in it. I'd love to trace the family.

SALLY VAN NORDEN AGE 7 1807

You'd think it would be easy, wouldn't you! However, I haven't been able to find the family.

Oh, there is someone on GR who has Susanna Peck 1789 Leicestershire.

Nice one! And they have traced descendants right towards present day, so hopefully are not too distantly related. I have sent the tree owner a message.

I have to say I can't imagine why we have this sampler. It is nicely done and reasonable well preserved for it's age, but as it is stitched on brown sackcloth and the colours used are orange and faded green (now the same color as the background!) it's not something I can imagine anyone buying in a fleemarket or shop as it's not attractive enough. Very odd....

Elizabeth, there's this couple on the 1871 census:

Marriages Dec 1864
BENJAMIN Sarah Birmingham 6d 349
Van Noorden Phineas Ezekiel Birmingham 6d 349

where they are listed as Van Norden. Phineas is aged 45 from Edinburgh. maybe he had an aunt who made your sampler?!! lol

Hmmm.....Phineas may have been b in Edinburgh, but his father, R Ezekiel Van Noorden was b in Arundel, Sussex in about 1792!

Merry, thanks for looking. I have put this on another thread so as not to encroach on this one. :)
There must be a Dutch connection somewhere.

Just to throw a spanner among the pigeons, there's a place called Burbage in the Derbyshire Peak District.

Oh, my eldest sister married a Neale from the Leicester area but that's as much as I know, she's divorced from him now :)
