John and Mary Gough died in 1844 and 1845, leaving 7 children, the youngest were put in the workhouse, i have traced all the others but 2, William born 6 May 1843 and Harriott born abt 1835.

Sent for 2 death certs which i thought was the 2 youngest, but only Thomas died in there age 11 months of Small pox 21 days and convusions, the one for William says mother Eliza,

Have been seaching Ancestry for the last few hours and found a William Gough born 1843 in Leicester from 1881 onwards, but cannot find him before that. This William married Lucy Willis in 1863, cannot find her either.

1881 census-Living at 12 Belgrave Road Leicester
William Gough 38 -Occupation Tailor
Lucy Gough 38
Albert Gough 16
William A. Gough 14
Clara Gough 11
Rebecca Gough 8
Eliza Ann Gough 4
Walter E. Gough 1

In 1891 he`s a Bicycle and general dealer and 1901 Bicycle maker.

Can anyone find this family in 1871 or William in 1861 and 1851 please, i`m trying to work out if he`s mine.

Yes thats them, though they have mistranscibed Lucy`s age, should be 28 not 88, i can see why though, as there is a line across the 2.

Need to find William in 1861 and 1851 now, does anyone know at what age someone left the workhouse

I think I have found him in the 1851 as GOFF - a pauper in the workhouse - see what you think! no luck with the 1861 census though

I would say thats him, i know the youngest went to the workhouse, my GGreatgrandfather John Gough b. 1839 (Williams brother) was an apprentice tailor in 1851 age 12, so maybe William is apprenticed somewhere in 1861. Dad was a tailor.

I think i am going to claim him as my william.

Thank you for your help Val.

You are very welcome Sylvia....it certainly sounds as though it could well be him.
Shame about the 1861 - I have been trolling through but with no luck.

Ancestry does have some apprentice records now, but possibly they are only in the London area - I haven't looked.

Ooh, don't think I've seen any apprentice records on ancestry; I shall have a look. Sounds exciting!

Oh, I guess you mean the apprentice records that are included in the London poor law records.

Sorry KR - they must have been the ones I had heard about

I was just trawling the 1861 with William-1843 and Leicester and no sign of him.

I had seen those apprentice records, disappointed they are only for london.
