View Full Version : Liberty of Rolls??
I saw this given as a place of birth on the 1861 census
..it also said - Middlesex England
and I was wondering just what it meant. I did try googling, but honestly couldn't understand the information given.
Could anyone explain in plain English for me please...:o

It was/is part of the City of Westminster.
That's the extent of my knowledge though so I"ll have a google and see if I can piece it together as a Londoner

okay - decent information about it's exact location here: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/LONDON/1999-08/0934364237
It was a chapel in Chancery Lane - which leads me to think it would have come under City of London rather than City of Westminster.
Having worked along the road form there when I first left school it's in the legal district where all Inns of Court are and to my mind that's not Westminster at all and is still to this day covered by the City of London police

Hmmmm - I may be confusing things actually as here's the Wikipedia definition:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_of_the_Rolls
Within the PRO, there was the Rolls Chapel & while the Mormon place at Hyde Park was being refurbished, their records were housed there, amid some very ugly monuments.
Thankyou for that - it does make sense now....and it must have been a very small area as I have never come across it before in my daily searches through the records.
