I just rang my mum to tell her about her great grandmother.

We got to talking and I suddenly discovered that she had stayed with her grandmother as a child. Never bothered to tell me that before! :)

But I can't find her grandmother's death - Harriet Birch (nee Dye) b 1863 Kings Lynn - last seen 1811 in Leeds - my mum was born 1935 so she must have been alive about 1940 if my mum's memory is right.

Can anybody find her?

I don't suppose you can find her husband - Joe Birch b 1861 - I've not been able to pin it down.

The only one I've been able to find is Joe Birch age 57 Nottingham 7b 324

What census do you last have him on Mark?

1911 - but I've just spoken to my father and apparently he abandoned his wife and 10 kids - I think I just found him on Ancestry - in 1937

Again - funny what they remember to tell you when you ask the questions. 15 minutes ago I asked about Joe and was told - I don't remember him. Now it was - well he abandoned his family :)

I think they think you want exact dates and they don't remember those. They don't realise you only need a few pointers. Just need a nudge in the right direction.

My Mum often says "yes that's right" after I've done the spadework and ordered certs or coughed up for 1911 census entries.

Never forgotten the time she produced a box that belonged to my grandmother which was full of obituaries cut from newspapers, letters, certificates and Wills. It would have been lovelier if I hadn't forked out for most of the certs already!

Was she a time traveller? ;)
