Are you sure there's such a place as Norwich, Lanarkshire? I've never heard of it - though of course that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. 1891 says John jr was born in Glasgow, but his younger brother Joseph age 11 is shown as born London Poplar, so you would think they should be in London in 1881.

I am not positive Kite but all the other people that him him in their tree seem to think so ??????????????? although it only says Glascow Scotland on the census records ?
Thanks for your reply

The birthplace for John sr and John jr on the 1901 census looks like Glasgow Limrick. If you look at the first letter, it is the same as the first letter of Limehouse and London. I wonder whether it is a mangled attempt at Lanark? There is also a John Gallagher age 25, born Glasgow, listed as Fireman on the S S Hermia in Lancashire in 1901; I wonder whether that is John jr too?
He may well be at sea in 1911 in which case he might not be listed at all.

I think the other people who have him in their tree got Norwich from ancestry's transcription of the 1901 census, but it definitely doesn't say Norwich on the image.

thats interesting Kite as his two brothers Andrew and George were Fireman ? but I do have John in 1901 as a Stoker

He's a Furnace Stoker, isn't he? Wasn't a Fireman much the same thing?

Have you seen the baptisms for John and Mary Ann's children in the LMA records on ancestry? They had a few done together, on the 21st November 1883, at St Saviour's Poplar, giving their address as 56 Sabbarton Street:
Joseph born 14th June 1879, William born 1st Nov 1881 and Andrew born 29th Sep 1883.

And there are birth registrations for Henry Joseph Gallacher Sep 1879 Poplar and William Gallacher Dec 1881 Poplar. So surely they must be in Poplar somewhere in 1881?

you would think so ??? but so far not found any of them ,and that address is not on the 1881 census ??? at least not on FMP ?
Thanks for trying Kite

Sabberton (or Sabbarton) Street is in All Saints Poplar district 10 on the 1881 census but the images start at page 24, so it looks as though the rest of the street is missing, and maybe the Gallachers with it!

Update - found the rest of it in Poplar district 10! It does say All Saints Poplar on the images, so I have no idea why ancestry decided to split it in two. Now to look through for the Gallachers. It said in the description of enumeration district that there were Sabberton Street and Sabberton Street North, and I think the street may have been renumbered soon after the census, because I don't think there is a number 56 in 1881, but anyway, I'll have a look through.

Have found a John Gallacher in Scotland in 1871 as a Heater Fireman ?? could this be my John ??? he is a Stoker in 1875 on his marriage would the two occupations be similar?
Still cannot find him in 1881?

Definitely looks like "statute labourer". Googling it comes up with some matches but I can't see one that properly explains what it means.
