William Broomfield b WONERSH 1865 on his military history sheet says his father is James (crossed out) & his mother Sarah.

He serves 10 April 1884 to 9 April 1896.

So who is he?

There's this William:

WILLIAM BROOMFIELD
Christening: 02 MAY 1869 Wonersh, Surrey, England

Parents:
Father: WILLIAM BROOMFIELD Family
Mother: CHARLOTTE

My ancestors James & Sarah Broomfield have a son William, but he's born 1859/60. And his Dad doesn't die until 1900.

Why would you knock 5 years off your age?

There's a Sarah with a son Wm aged 6 on the 1871 census. I expect Sarah's maiden name is Peal as she is living with her mum and dad. Her OH isn't at home and her son is born in Cranston Surrey according to the transcription. I'm not sure if this is a genuine placename?

On the 1891 census, James and Sarah Broomfield have a son William age 32 born Wonersh with them in Wonersh, and he is a farm labourer, so that isn't him. Strange!

The only trouble is, her OH isn't called James !

Marriages Dec 1860
Broomfield Lauder Brighton 2b 285
Ellis John Potter Brighton 2b 285
Hearsey Ellen Brighton 2b 285
Peal Sarah Margaret Brighton 2b 285

The above Sarah matches in 1861 and 1871 (b Ramsgate aged 25 and 35)

The Wonersh Williams are listed as Bloomfield instead of Broomfield in 1871 on ancestry, if that helps. Not a mistranscription - it says Bloomfield on the images!

So is William listed on the 1891 census with the army, Phoenix? Or was he abroad?

By the way, the William whose parents were William and Charlotte is in Wonersh in 1891 with his parents, and he is a Gardener (age 21). So it's not him either.

Cranleigh perhaps? Not far from Wonersh.

I don't think it can be Lauder Broomfield's son. Having excitedly following him, he's in America by 1881. Sarah Peal is very odd, as she appears to be Sarah Cull, remarried, so a dil, not a d. But there could have been two women with identical ages & birthplaces.

William the soldier is supposed to be "home" in 1891 which suggests the UK. I suppose he could have been on furlough, but I'd have thought it would have said solldier on the census. Unless he was a big brave boy, but never owned up to Dad?
