Hi,

I have this Atkin family that I found quite alot of info for yesterday at Kew. The Father, my Great Great Grandmother's brother was living in Isle of Man. He was born in Toxteth Park in 1841 and was still alive in 1918 when he accepted a Military Cross on behalf of his son who was killed in WW1.

I would be grateful for your advice.

Well, I think this must be new because I've never seen it before, but it seems some of the Isle of Man BMD indexes are online now!

I would have a look for your man but I don't know his name, lol.

Yes, definitely "new".

I have Manx ancestors and gave up trying to fathom out how to order bmd certs as there was nothing on line and any request had to be in writing to the Manxbmd. All seemed like too much hard work, plus the money problem...

Off for a good look! Thanks Wendy!

And the site that comes up trumps was this one Kate. Thanks.

Here is the link to the page my chap and his wife appear on.

Glad you found them.

That site makes me wish I had some Manx ancestors to look for!

Slightly off topic, but I remember how I nearly wept with gratitude when I discovered that Manx parish regs were on the IGI.

I ordered the films to check of course but I have to say that the standard of transcription was as near to perfection as I have ever seen, lol! Made all the years of waiting worth while.

The big problem with Manx ancestors though, is the common names, the (extremely) variant spellings and the old tradition of a married woman often being called by her maiden name. I haven't made much progress backwards, despite the availability of PRs because of this.

Wendy, this one has just helped me too.

They are buried in the parish of Malew in Castletown.

Burial date
ATKIN, Agnes 69 Mal 12 Feb 1920

ATKIN, Richard 94 Mal 6 Oct 1935

Does anyone on the site live in the Isle of Man please?

I have e-mailed all the links to my daughter's fiance as he has I of M ancestors. They must have added a few recently as there are more links than I remember. I found three wills for him, which will make him smile.:)

The names drive me nuts - I copied the burials for four different surnames which his family has - and I ended up with 231 pages!!! (I only expected a few!)

Thanks OC for mentioning the IGI, I have just found two of Richard's children who were born in India on there.
