Walter Dorothy (born c1848 in the Exeter area in Devon) was a Mariner according to 1881 census and a Seaman in 1891. He was living with his wife Mary & family in St Leonards, Exeter in both census. He married Mary in Dec qtr 1871 in Exeter. Mary died in 1905.

I cannot find him in 1871, nor any of the family in 1901. He had at least 7 sons and one daughter by 1901. Would he have taken his family when he went on a voyage? There is a record on Ancestry regarding a Commander W Dorothy on the Incoming Passenger Lists 1878 - 1960 coming into Southampton, but my membership won't let me view the record. Could anyone check this for me please?

He is a distant relation by marriage of my husband, his only daughter married my husband's great uncle, so I haven't researched him in any detail, but I know he was alive at her wedding in September 1912. There is a death listed for a Walter Dorothy in the Exeter area in Mar qtr 1917.

This photo of the Dorothy family was taken about 1900.

Any help finding these Dorothys would be much appreciated, thank you.

Can you give us the names, years and places of birth of Mary and the children, please, so we know who we're looking for?

I think the 1891 captures most of them:

There's a C Dorothy aged 12 on the TNA 1901 index b Exeter, but I can't find her on Ancestry. She is recorded as 'daughter' in 1901 so should be with her parent(s), but that's not helping at the moment!!

Ah, Ancestry have them as Dowley in 1901 and all with their initials.

No wonder I couldn't find them! Walter had changed his occupation to 'Foundry Labourer' LOL

Thank you once again Merry.

Sorry Kite, I forgot to add the census reference & the children's names.
