Date, place and cause of death – 31 Mar 1863, Old Nichol St, Bethnal Green, Middlesex. Sudden death, fever accelerated by long privation and want of proper food.
Newspaper (abbreviated) report of inquest:
"On Saturday an inquiry was held by Mr John Humphreys, coroner for Middlesex respecting the death of Sarah Moore who was alleged to have died under the following shocking circumstances;- Wm Moore, watch finisher, 3 Old Nichol St, Bethnal Green said that he, his wife and family of nine children lived in one room at the top of the house. His wife was ill of fever and she would not allow for a doctor to be sent for. They were not able to do more than to hold on to a miserable existence. They had only one garment each. They applied for parish relief but were always refused it, they offered instead orders to enter the workhouse. The parish once gave them 2s 6d a week for one month while the deceased was confined. The lately deceased became wet through while trying get food or assistance and became quite ill. She went to the overseer to ask him to take her children into the house as she was too ill to care for them. He refused and only bullied her. A doctor stated that the whole family were in a most deplorable state of destitution and the children could hardly survive, they would certainly die if something was not done for them. The Coroner ordered a post mortem to determine to what extent starvation had contributed to the death of the deceased."
