Would a birth in prison appear in the ordinary GRO indices? (c. 1919)

I assumed it would, but read something that suggested it wouldn't !

Thanks

I don't know, but can't see why it wouldn't appear as normal. you would only know that it was a prison birth if you actually had the cert, so I can't see any reason for it not to be in the index.

Thanks Lynn - I haven't got the cert as I can't find it in the index! :d

Why do I get a feeling of doom when I read Muggins' thread titles?

Deaths in prison appear, so I don't see why births shouldn't.

RAOTFL, Merry :d - and thanks!

It was a bit of a long shot, anyhow :)

What I was trying to say was that it would be listed under a normal reg district, so there would be no stigma attached to it, you wouldn't be able to look at the index & see someone had been born in prison. I can't see any other reason for not putting them in.

Thanks Lynn - sorry if I misunderstood :o

I guess you must be right.

Another of my madcap theories out of the window! LOL :d

I don't get a feeling of doom, just hope that she has finally got another piece in the puzzle and the chance of a good read. ;)

People would only be accidentally born in prison...most mothers are removed to a hospital to give birth.

However, the word "prison" would not appear on the birth cert anyway, just a street address for the prison.

Thanks everyone - but I think I've been barking up the wrong tree!!

I got the idea that births in prison did not feature in the GRO inices from a rather confusingly written article in the Ancestry freebie magazine - the same magazine that explained at length how much easier it now is to obtain certificates now that you order them direct from Ancestry - no mention of the difference in price:(
