I am trying to order some certificates before the price increase!!!

Please could someone tell me what I should do if the GRO reference number is unclear in the index - do I have to pay extra to have it checked?

The one I am looking at is Mary Alder died Q1 1844 Gloucestershire. The two transcribers on FreeBMD have: Wheatenhurst 11 415 and 11 4_5 - looking at the image I wonder if it could possibly be 445.

The info states "The expected page range for this district is 439 to 448". Does that mean it can't be 415??

It's definitely 445 (viewed Ancestry image), and yes you are right that it couldn't be 415.

Thanks Merry that's great, I can safely order that one then.

I am intrigued by this death as she was buried by the Assistant Chaplain to the Gloucester County Gaol and her age was given as 98 in the burial register! The cause of death will probably be something boring though, knowing my luck.

Old age?!!

Have you seen her in 1841? I can't see her entry.

Ah, is that her at Brockthrop?

Old age?!!
Probably! :d

Have you seen her in 1841? Ah, is that her at Brockthrop?
No, I don't seem to have a record of searching for her on the census. That will probably be her at Brookthorpe, as she seemed to spend all her life there. I would be interested to know who she is with, if anyone [not currently got a sub]. Thanks Merry.

Ancestry have spelled it Brockthrop, Gloucestershire!

Samuel Alder 58 Ag Lab
Betty Alder 54
Mary Alder 87
Peter Alder 18
Enoch Alder 16

It's not at all clear where they were born. There's a mark in the Ireland/Scotland/Foreign Parts column for all of them, but they might be ticks as you say Mary spent her life there!

That's good, she's living with her eldest son and his family and they were all born in Gloucestershire, so as you say the mark in the Foreign Parts column is just enumerator ticks. Many thanks for your time Merry, it's much appreciated. :)
