View Full Version : Help reading place of birth
Can anyone work out the place of birth of Elizabeth Tew in this 1851 image ? It has been transcribed as Haworth, but that's in Yorkshire, not Bedfordshire.
Her husband was born in Shalstone, Bucks, but that's not exactly clear on this image either, so I'm wondering if it has been written incorrectly too.
The Ancestry link is:

I'd be grateful for any opinions.
Thanks, Rick.

Well it looks like Howarth or Haworth - it certainly starts with an H and ends in TH.

The first bit is Beds that's for sure
Thanks for taking a look. I agree it starts with an H and ends th and it's definitely Beds. It looks like Howarth but then again Thomas's place of birth looks like Shawsom and I think it should say Shalstone.
Not my area, but there is a Tilsworth in Beds.

Thanks - that's a good suggestion. Shalstone has been badly written either in the household schedule or when copied into the enumerator's book so perhaps Tilsworth has suffered the same fate :)
What was Elizabeth maiden name?
I think its MARSWORTH, which is near Tring

I think its MARSWORTH, which is near Tring
And currently in Bucks., not Beds.
Yes, agree, Its one of those places where the boundaries meet though.
Marsworth may well be in Bucks, but has a Tring Post code...which is in Herts.
Bedfordshire boundary is a few miles or so up the road
( Edlesborough is Beds)
is it one of those counties that moved about? ( You know what I mean! :p)
Could just be the enumerator not being able to read the writing on the initial sheet.

Sorry Jess - I don't know. That's the main reason I'm interested in finding her place of birth.

Also a good suggestion. Google doesn't suggest it has swapped counties though. On balance I think Beds has been correctly transcribed so I think Tilsworth is currently more likely (even if it doesn't look like that on the image).

I think that's the conclusion I've come to as well Nell.
